Graphics upgrade advice

My ageing 9800 Pro has finally given up the ghost and as such I'll need to be getting a new graphics card. Currently, I have an AGP, socket 754 motherboard complete with an A64 3000. Given I have around £200 to play with, do I:

1) Spend the lot on an AGP card, such as a 7800 GS.

2) Spend £40 on a PCI-E 754 motherboard and the rest on a PCI-E card such as a 7600GT.

Whichever option you recommend, can you also recommend which would be the best card to go for within the budget?

Many thanks :)

I would go with the Pci-e upgrade. I did and have never regretted it. Also you can carry your card over to any future upgrad.

The 7600GT is a very good card and at £117 it's a bargain. Saying that, if you shop around you can find brand new 7800GT's for £158.

An interesting card about to be released is the Inno3D GeForce 7600GST which seems to be a slightly underclocked 7600GT but price wise sits between the GS and GT. Here's a very interesting review of it.

make the leap to PCI-E, its worth it, second hand PCI-E cards are much cheaper than second hand AGP ones.

Especially if your old card is in demand.

selling a 6800GT AGP can get you 2x6800GTs on PCI-E without spending a penny! money would be better spent on a more modern card like a 7600 etc though

stuff the the 7600gt imo, try and borrow, beg or steal an extra £20 or so and plump for the £40 mobo and get the 256mb x1800xt @ £170. thats what id try and do anyways.

TBH i would pick up a amd64 939 for like £60 in MM a mobo for £40 and then like a X850xt or something for the £100 mark

+ you can sell your old stuff so then say you have more like £180 for a graphics

i wouldnt bother buying any AMD cpu right now, theyre due a massive price drop soon and the performance gain is negligable. id buy a new mobo and better gfx card

Thanks for the comments guys, looks like I'll invest in a new mobo then and go PCI-E.

Think I might just go with the 7600GT though, as for 120 quid you can't go wrong. Plus, looking at benchmarks, it performs nearly as well as the 7800GT and I know that card is good enough for my needs as my mate has one.

Cheers all :)
