Graphics versus story versus gameplay?

Have you tried any of the texture packs, Shaders or Post-processing injectors for Skyrim?

IMO it is one of the best looking games i have ever played with these, i sometimes just have to stop and look around at the amazing scenery! (also draw distance and distant object textures are greatly improved)

Like ?
I've not tried any mods, I'm playing it with everything maxed/on ultra, 4x MSAA & FXAA, 1920x1080.

I am mainly annoyed by the lack of depth in ground textures and walls and buildings and stuff, tessellation would fix that imho. And the poor draw distance, I can still see low quality textures clearly ( I play on a 32'' screen up close) in the distance and things popping up and trees looking crap in the distance and no foliage... Those are the main things that annoy me tbh.

This thread is being used to discuss the mods and tweaks which are being used, keep an eye out for improved detail in distad land and the ini tweaks for draw distances(if you can handle them, apparently they kill FPS), also the High-res roads are great

I'm playing saints row on 360 at the moment and it does look terrible and the story is nonexistent but it's such a blast that I am always going back to it, i guess it doesn't matter how it looks as long as it's fun

I like a balance of the three. For instance, Resident Evil 1 on the PS1 is one of my all time favourite games. It has decent story, gameplay but the gfx are now really dated and as such I find it hard to enjoy it as I remember enjoying it years ago.

I'd now much rather play the remake. So I think graphics do play a big part. That said, good graphics wont save a game that has bad story and gameplay.

It is all about immersion, if a game can get me immersed in it then it is a winner, gameplay/story/graphics/sound are the tools it uses to achieve that, so however it balances those is fine so long as the goal is achieved. Not all of them need to be present but the overall goal of immersion in the game must be met through a balance of those factors imo.

(excuse this poor grammar, been awake for well over 48 hours now and i honestly can't think about anything)

Depends on the type of game. TF2 is my favorite right now, graphics are more a consequence of the gameplay design, Skyrim looks gorgeous and it is part of the enjoyment, enjoyed mass effect 2 and deus ex 2 for the 'cinematic' feel, where the story drives the game.

Story/Gameplay > Graphics.

However, that comes with a large disclaimer, these days it is incredibly easy to make a game look good without going for Crysis levels of advancement, as a result, there is literally no excuse for a developer to release a game that looks like it was made 15 years ago and be excused because it has a good story. Also graphics can look great without being top of the range realistic, TF2 for instance or Trine, both VERY good looking games within their own setting but hardly pushing boundaries.

Story/Gameplay is largely limited only by the creativity of the developer, graphics is something that is getting better with time, as a result I would say it's perfectly reasonable to expect a game released today to be good looking and make use of current technology AND have a good story and decent gameplay.

I would also say sound is just as if not more important than graphics as well.

Gameplay ≥ Graphics > Story.

im probably one of the only people who has never once watched a cutscene, i just do not care. To me the game is about PLAYING the game, if i wanted to watch a movie i'd be doing that instead ;)

+1 mate i never watch cut scenes id rather be playing than watching...

For me, quality long-term online play. So i like games like BF3, CS:S, rfactor, Minecraft.

Anything else to me has become seriously boring. Just can't play single player anything any more.

Gameplay has to be first. That's the difference between playing a game or watching a movie or reading a book.

I'm not too fussed about the graphics as long as they are good enough to enable me to play the game.

Story is a tricky one because it depends on the game you are playing. Some games wouldn't exist if they were not story driven, but some games play really well with no story at all. Take the Elite games as an example... classic games but you write the story yourself as you go.

However, a very good example of a modern game in which the story trumps over graphics and gameplay is 'To the Moon' - http://freebirdgames.com/to_the_moon/ A very good and profound game which is all about the story. Try it!

Gameplay first and foremost.

Storyline dependent on game. Online fps has no need for any storyline.

Gfx really couldn't care less as long as its Resonable ish. SWTOR at standard is far above acceptable, even c&c renegade is fine for that sort of game.

gameplay > story > graphics

I will happily turn graphics right down as long as the game runs smooth im not fussed over graphics, started playing deus ex for the first time last week and am not fussed over the graphics at all :)

Gameplay > *

A great game doesn't need good graphics or story, but you can't have a great game without decent gameplay. Everything else is gravy.
