There is a player two squares away from me. 16 pop for two days now. I would have attacked ages ago but little worried about these traps as the player is a gaul. How likely is it this player will have traps with a pop of 16?

I've been raiding a 25 pop Gaul for the last 3 days

At present, yes. There is talk of their forum competitions yielding some prizes possibly in gold, but nothing imminent or useful.
I bought an extra 100 gold today for 5 euros. My +25 production ran out at a really awkward time and my wheat production dropped to -8 and I had no other quick way to rectify it!
