Chelsea Football Club has the following statement on William Gallas to explain the circumstances behind his departure. These include his refusal to play for the team, and if selected, a threat to score an own goal.

The statement says:

Chelsea FC believes it is important for our supporters to be made aware of the full facts regarding William Gallas and the lack of respect he showed to the fans, the manager and the club.

Despite leaving he continues to attack José Mourinho and this cannot be left unchallenged.

Chelsea made William Gallas a very substantial and attractive new contract offer to stay towards the end of last season. This was rejected.

The issue was purely one of money, despite his public comments that he wanted a new challenge, to play abroad and so forth. These were just a smokescreen to cover up the fact he was hawking himself to the highest bidder.

Having failed to secure his demands, his position became increasingly intransigent and unacceptable.

He initially refused to play against Liverpool in the FA Cup semi-final last season in an effort to force an increased contract offer.

As is now well documented he refused to join up with the team in Los Angeles during pre-season, despite agreeing the dates for his return as the other World Cup players did, with the club.

When José Mourinho generously offered him a way back into the "family" after the American tour, this was thrown back in the Chelsea manager's face.

The manager told him that, even if he did not agree a new contract but returned to the "family" and abided by the rules, he would still select the best players available and would not punish him playing wise.

However despite meetings to try and resolve the problems Gallas made it clear to José Mourinho he would never play for Chelsea again.

Before the first game of the season against Manchester City, when only four defenders were available and John Terry was doubtful with an injury, he refused to play.

He went on to threaten that if he was forced to play, or if he was disciplined and financially punished for his breach of the rules, that he could score an own goal or get himself sent off, or make deliberate mistakes.

Clearly this was a totally unacceptable situation for the manager, the team and the club.

Chelsea's interests had to be protected and a solution was collectively agreed. If a satisfactory deal for Chelsea could be found, Gallas would be sold. If that did not happen it was agreed by all that Gallas would have to fulfil the terms of his contract.

Chelsea has a wage structure in place that is valued not only on the contribution of the player to the manager and the team, but also on a player’s respect for the club and contribution to the promotion and image of the club off the field. Every player is expected to play their part in this.

William Gallas rarely recognised these responsibilities. He also failed to recognise the role José Mourinho and Chelsea played in helping him become a double Premiership champion for a player whose only league title prior to that had been in the French Second Division.

Very strong words

Bloody 'ell. He actually threatened to score an oggy or get sent off? :/

Wonder what his response to this will be.

Makes the weekend stories about JM having the hump with Kenyon over the selling of Gallas look silly;)

Deary me, if gallas is such a bad egg attacking mourinho then why should a football club sink to that level as well? God I can't wait for the season to get properly in full swing so the football makes the headlines and not crap like this. Have to say though one mistake Gallas has made - he should have followed the Ashley Cole example and wrote a book.

Edit: saw johnnyg's post agree totally ;)

Could it not be that the guy just really wanted to play for a different club?
Mabye he honestly did want to be a first choice centerback and just play football and enjoy it.

The guy isnt smart enough to be making those kinds of threats.

Even if that were the case, refusing to play in an FA cup semi to get a better contract is childish & not the way to do it.

Sounds like rubbish to me, wouldn't be the first time Chelsea football club are not telling things as it is. If he was causing problems from the start why were Chelsea not welcoming any offers and not letting him go? If a player says stuff like this without a proper reason he would be let go of end of story but Chelsea kept him at the club all this time

We don't know why Gallas made these threats, for all you know Chelsea could have said they will force him to rot on the bench for a year if he didn't sign and play for them, so he could have countered and said if they made him play against his will he would score an own goal. Unless we know in what situation he made these comments it is very hard to understand why he said it.

Chelsea could offer him more money than Arsenal could ever dream of giving him so why would he join us? There is more than meets the eye to this story because he made it clear he wants to go but Chelsea had told clubs like Milan that they were not interested in selling him, so he was being kept against his will.

As Jazz said, I think there's more to this than that statement suggests.

Having said that, if it is true, then he's acted like a spoilt child and we could be in for some fun and games in the years ahead, if it's true.

It's a bit too harsh a statement to be rubbish, no-one would make stuff like that up about a player.
There were no offers for Gallas.
Chelsea did offer him more money.

Edit: Here's a statement from last Monday too:

José Mourinho has challenged William Gallas to explain the reasons why the player has not been involved in any of Chelsea’s games so far this season.

Having missed the pre-season visit to the United States, Gallas rejoined the first team squad on August 7th. However despite having been in full training ever since, he has not taken to the pitch in competitive action.

Recently Gallas has been subject to a bid from Arsenal to take him across London. There has been talk that he may form part of a deal that sees Ashley Cole move in the other direction.

As the transfer deadline approaches, the transfer of Gallas to Arsenal has become unlikely and Mourinho would like the defender to tell his side of the story on why he is not playing.

“The best thing to do is to ask him,” says the Chelsea manager. “People should talk to his agent and try to have a press conference with Gallas.

“There are a lot of answers but answers he should be the one to tell. It is not that I don’t want to tell but I shouldn’t be the one to say things that he should tell. This situation deserves a press conference with the player.”

No offers...

Chelsea cane william gallas making him look like the root of all evil: makes them look squeaky clean. Good god, such behaviour at Chelsea, a club owned by a russian billionaire shadier than a hermit's shady place, with their expensively assembled team of mercenary defectors who all of course went to chelsea for purely footballing reasons, and of course their latest recruit mrs ashley cole, who was somehow betrayed by arsenal into having against the rules meetings with chelsea whilst still contracted to Arsenal. How a temple of virtue such as chelsea will recover from a man like gallas is anyones guess I suppose all we can do is pray.

Believing such statements at face value is foolish.

Clearly there's a lot of bad blood but not in the form and shape either side presents it.

Should they just shup up & let him do & say what he wants then?
He signed a contract, he should have fulfilled it professionally. Can't remember Cole refusing to play for Arsenal even though he wanted out.

There are standards of conduct a club should adhere to imo, that is just a parting shot, and considering chelseas recent conduct regarding transfers a bit of a case of the kettle calling the pot black. Which is my point, chelsea **** gallas, they look squeaky clean. Shifts the emphasis of corruption over to a player now at arsenal.

Actually Cole just said he was sick or injured when he blatently wasn't. Plus i doubt meeting opposition managers was allowed in his contract.

Personally i think that both Gallas and Chelsea have behaved badly, i think Chelsea have been particularly spiteful in light of the years he gave the club, if he wanted to spend the best years of his career as a CB not a makeshift LB then they could have happily sold him abroad, it was only when things like 'making him rot in the reserves' started being said that Gallas turned nasty.

IMO no worse than Cole or SWP behaved when leaving Man City, and thats not even mentioning Jon Obi Mikel.

Well he made one complaint i believe, he said that cole should be aware that working with mourinho could be difficult or something like that. Hardly major slander considering it was general knowledge that they didn't get on. Therefore such a damning statement is hardly neccesary. Tbh he's an arsenal player now and seeing as arsenal have always displayed a lot of dignity and maturity in these situations I think that will be the end of it. It's still indicative of a darker emerging trend post abramovich takeover however, kenyon has stated openly that attacking the arsenal 'brand' to establish chelsea as the no 1 london club in brand terms is his immediate goal and stuff like that statement is how they'll do it. woohoo football will become one big corporate slagfest thank you so much chelsea.
