Greenlizard0 PL & Championship Football Thread ** spoilers ** [18th - 21st Dec 2020]

Who would have thought the team that’s 2nd bottom in the table and down to 10 men would have more attacking intent and look more like winning the game

it was probably a sending off for the shirt pull even if it was outside the box. Anderson was already on a yellow.

But it was a weak direct red.

Except he didn’t really pull his shirt, tried to get a grasp and touched his hip which 2seconds later caused it to dislocate it seems

And this is the Steve Bruce luck I keep going on about, we deserved nothing but a comprehensive defeat tonight and some how he manages to fluke out a point

I mean he did really, even if it was slight. But the punishment at most should have been a free kick and a sending off via 2nd yellow - which would give you less time without him @ 1 game.

The 3 game ban is the kicker here.

Not from what I saw, either way he was going to get sent off. He was already on a yellow, and it was at least a yellow card. Contact in the box without an attempt to play the ball, arguably a red there. I think it’s still only a 1 game suspension though as it’s not dangerous play?

Arsenal are in a relegation battle. its a scary thought, confidence really is such a fragile thing
Not yet, two more losses and they may be but Arteta needs to go now to change that

No way the owners would let relegation happen as all they have cared about is making money

Im not entirely sure what people expect. The Arsenal team is the poorest Arsenal team i think ive even seen. Its been badly managed from the top since Wenger left.
It's fairly mediocre relative to peers but overall I'm not sure it's the absolute worst, if you think back to what our midfield was in the early-mid 90s with the likes of Selley, Morrow, McGoldrick, Jensen etc. Good keeper and back four, decent forwards but atrocious in midfield.

In terms of what I expect, I'd expect to be ahead of Newcastle in the table.

Thats the thing...Arsenal dont have a good keeper or back four. Tierney aside, who by the way i dont believe is as good as Arsenal fans think, the back 4 is poor. Bellerin is utter tripe and hinders more then he helps and Leno is average. The midfield is again up there with the worst in the league and then you have a forwardline of a lad who doesnt seem interested and Willian and Pepe who wouldnt look out of place playing in the Championship.

I think it's decision time; do you stick with Arteta or get a new guy in whilst there is still time to influence things in January. Not just in terms of transfers but also re-integrating Ozil into the squad and recalling Torreira from loan. For me if you have Torreira, Partey and Ozil in midfield that's a cut above the worst in the league. If Willian and Pepe aren't delivering then you need to look at Martinelli. Arsenal should be able to get more from the squad they have, for whatever reason that's not happening at the moment and for me part of that reason is Arteta favouring the likes of Xhaka over Torreira which makes no sense to me.

Arsenal need a massive clear-out and just accept mid table mediocrity whilst that is happening. They need to get a decent manager to do the job. I would argue Rafa Benitez would be perfect for the job. I could name players from Spurs, Everton, Wolves, Southampton, Leicester that I wouldn't mind at United but cannot think of a single player that I would want from Arsenal.

Tierney and Partey? Id add Saka to that aswell.

Now obviously Arsenal should be able to improve from where they are but to get back to expecting to qualify for the CL and challenge for major titles? I actually think Arsenal are now in a position where they're going to struggle to ever get back to the top table, at least without a manager coming in and working a miracle.

This Arsenal squad needs major surgery and there's so many challenges preventing or at least making it harder for them to carry it out. There has never been a worse time to shift overpaid duds and Arsenal have a lot of them to shift. Their strategy of giving out big contracts to aging players is going to come back and bite them on the arse because they won't be able to shift them and they'll also be the benchmark for all new signings contracts. Financially Arsenal are gradually being cut adrift too. As of this season (with or without covid) Arsenal's revenue is approx £200m less than Liverpool, City & Utd's, around £100m behind Chelsea and around £50m behind Spurs (£100m+ if Spurs make the CL next season and Arsenal don't).

Arsenal can't buy their way out of trouble. It's going to take a sustained period of making clever decisions and good management for Arsenal to build their way back up and it's difficult to see that happening when they've had 5+ years of poor decisions and management.

We need a Bilbao type performance against Man U from years back to win today. Looking at them goals, they are so leeds of today. it’s amazing what Bielsa can get out of his players. Half our team were league 1 standard before he came onboard.

Never going to get away with that, too high and rightly given as a red. No idea what the co commentator is talking about it looked bad in real time as well.
