Greenlizard0 PL & Championship Football Thread ** spoilers ** [19th - 22nd August 2022]

It's nuts how far up both he and Robertson are without anyone in midfield with the legs to cover them. It's not only nuts, it's tactically inept.
Yep, it's lunacy. When we've got controlled possession and our press is working it's one thing. Bomb on and it's only a small risk that the other team will both win back possession and beat the press well enough to play in behind you. That's fine.

But tonight we never had the control for that. And when you give it away, you have to drop to halfway. It's criminal that Trent ended up in that position, whether it's his fault or Klopp's.

Stormzy the Utd fan, from Croydon lol

You do realise that most clubs have more fans than there are in the immediate 10 mile radius around the ground. Perhaps people should not be allowed to support a team if they move out of the area either.

Its such a weird little take that so many people have on supporting football clubs. I would wager 99% of the fans of most clubs don't go to 99% of their games. It makes 0 difference.

Its bad enough playing with one of Henderson or Milner in the middle as neither have the legs these days to cover the necessary ground in the current formation, having both is a recipe for disaster. tbh I'd rather see Carvalho then either of them but I suppose from Klopp's perspective he'd lose a senior figure from the middle of pitch.

edit: By legs I mean burst of pace to cover ground up on the pitch, both have never been quick/dynamic but hendo in particular gives the ball away far far too cheaply these days.
It doesn't matter who the other midfielders are if your right sided central midfielder is on the right wing and Trent is high up the pitch. We had the exact same problems at the start of last season too and it's not something that's happening by accident. It's a conscious decision we're taking to create space and get Trent on the ball 30ish yards from goal but it has it's consequences and being susceptible to quick counters down that side is one of them.

It was partially forced by Elliott's injury but we made the decision to move back to a more disciplined 3 man midfield from around November time because we were conceding too much and if things continue as they have then I suspect we'll have to do it again.

Such a manc excuse.

Tbh you had 9 players out injured.

It was going to be a tough task.

There's no excuse for Trent's positioning there either
I really don't get this criticism. For the past 4-5 years we've pushed our fullbacks forward whenever we've been in possession, it's been a huge part of how successful we've been but you think Trent should be stood next to Gomez when the ball is falling to Henderson 15 yards inside Utd's half?

Any news on Virgil? worried he is still stuck in that bog in his wellies defending that first goal.

He's had a bad start to the season, just seems to relaxed. Pretty sure that's the reason Milner was giving him both barrels tonight

Yes, I commentated on the formation during the game. the current set up with Elliot pushing high and wide is to give Trent the room to move more inside and to create overloads on the right hand side, the trouble is that A. We're not feeding the ball out to the right for some reason and B. there's even more space in the void created by Trent moving more centrally than usual because of it. Couple of season ago Henderson had the ability to cover the space left by both Trent and to a lesser degree Robertson, this season his athleticism is even worse than last year so we're leaving giant holes with no one to cover the space. Both fullbacks so far this season have been awful with the ball in an attacking sense so the issues we've got are 3 fold.

Maybe both fullbacks need some time out of the team (not at the same time mind you), but then you've got to change the formation as whoever comes in for Trent wont be able to move inside and offer as much in an attacking sense (in theory, as I've said Trent has been awful with the ball so far).

It's not an individual player issue, it's a tactical issue. Like I said, look back at the early months of last season where we were giving up chances for fun and conceding too much with Fabinho in that role. It's clearly a tactical switch that Klopp and co believe in because we've gone back to it this season despite it not really working last season.

We've either got to be better in possession when we're in those positions, become a lot more cynical with our defending when the ball is first turned over or ditch it because too often, this and the start of last season, we are finding sides are able to get possession, turn and play 1 pass into that channel and be through on goal.

Not sure if you are misremembering the opening of last season, but the chances we were giving up were totally different to what we've been seeing in the opening games of this season. By in large last year the chance creations came from players switching off /making errors when teams had the ball in and around 25 yards of our goal. It was the 2nd half of the season teams were exploiting the space left by the fullbacks, usually our right hand side as there was zero cover by the midfield that side when Trent got forward, similar to what we're seeing so far in the opening games of this season. Regardless, Hendo is usually cover for Trent's side when he goes forward, with Fab being cover for Robertson when he goes forward.

Re the first point, I don't believe that was the case at all. We were far too open in midfield at the start of last season and it was sometime after the Brighton game that we toned down the right mid/right wing thing and our defensive record improved massively.

As for the last sentence, I'm slightly confused. It's always been the right and left of our 3 that have covered the fullbacks, not our 6 and that's the problem we're having now - our right sided CM isn't covering when Trent goes forward so there's a huge space for teams to attack into. When Henderson's played on the right of the 3 (with the exception of a few games early last season) he would cover when Trent went forward. Expecting him to be able to do that from the central of the 3 midfield roles is a bit much, just like it was for Fabinho at times last season when Elliott or Hendo were on the right wing.
