Greenlizard0 PL & Championship Football Thread ** spoilers ** [26th Feb - 4th March 2021]

OK, I'm slightly confused by that reply. What are they meant to do differently which will lead to less abuse? Unless you think they're making these mistakes on purpose or just not putting any effort in then I'm struggling to think of what they can change.

Whilst that is opinion. It still doesn't change the fact that if the ref did say what has been said to Harry Maguire then it is nothing short of match fixing.
The bit what confuses me is everyone thought it hit masons arms we didnt appeal for a pen it was chelsea players saying it was hand ball so why stop the match in the first place if it isnt a pen

Isn’t the reason it’s not a pen because Greenwood is pushing his hand up? It’s very slight but it looks like it to me? I guess that’s what they’ve decided on.

Idk.

They stopped the game for the VAR check

Do you really think the ref would say that though? How stupid would an official need to be to admit that to a player knowing that every word he says is being heard by the lino's, 4th official and VAR (are they all in on this big conspiracy?) and very likely that his words would have been picked up by one of the countless Sky cameras?

The fact that Utd have very quickly came out back tracking would suggest that Shaw either genuinely did misunderstand what was said or he was twisting words.

Var had already checked it whilst play was ongoing baz the ref was advised to look at screen as its a pen according to var but ref doesnt give it but it clearly hits chelsea players hand which is in a un natural position var can only interfear if the ref has made a obvious mistake as ref didnt give a pen what was the obvios mistake if it wasnt the hand ball missed by the ref like i said i thought in real time it was masons arm it hit but in slow motion its the chelsea players hand

Yes, I'm aware that VAR was checking during play but you asked why they stopped play if it wasn't a penalty. They stopped play because VAR advised the ref to check the monitor, as his view was that it was a penalty but the final call rests with the onfield official. He either didn't think it was an offence at all or didn't think it was obviously a wrong enough decision to overturn his original decision.

I've been saying since last season that the whole clear & obvious thing was mess and that we shouldn't bother using tech for subjective calls because of it - today something is clear and obvious and tomorrow it's not. We get the same inconsistent decisions as before but with extra delays and controversy. Throw in the madness of the handball rule and it's no surprise that we're getting even more inconsistent decisions.

What we need is Ref Idol on ITV.

A panel of referees watch videos of matchday incidents, decide what the outcome should've been and see if the contestants reach the same conclusion.

The winner gets to become a Premier League referee, the losers get converted in to corner flags.

Just bring in refs from different countries. There is no way in hell if I ever became a ref I would be impartial. Even though Man Utd is my team I have always had a soft spot for Forrest due to them being the local big team when growing up but to most people would never know. From that I would have a bias against Derby. My father was also a Spurs season ticket holder born and bred so I would naturally have bias towards them also.

My point is it is virtually impossible for any English ref to have an unbiased opinion. Either that or Var needs to have the final say on decisions. Not the ref.

The FA need to listen to what the ref has said and if Shaw is incorrect they need to be looking into punishing him and the club. You cant come out with comments like that.

Why should the club be punished the club didn't say it it was shaw who said it and if hes wrong then yeh he has to face the consequences of that

If found to be true then what?
The official would be sacked and very possibly the game would be replayed. Utd have already come out and said Shaw misheard the official though so it's pretty certain that the official didn't say it.

edit: and it's just being reported that the FA won't take action against Shaw and Ole for their comments. Another decision going Utd's way!

Or it could be true and they just want to keep it quiet as investigating might open up a can of worms. Should be able to hear refs when making decisions in game. They won't make any dodgy ones then.

Refs report already said the Sheffield United result was incorrect.

The FA not taking any action. Shaw might of misheard it but I bet he was on the right lines.
If it was true then no action would be taken against Utd though. Had Maguire backed up Shaw's version of events then the FA would have had to investigate the claims - what the ref said would have been heard by at least 4 other officials (I'm not sure if it's recorded) and I'm sure would have been picked up on Sky's cameras too. If there was any truth in Shaw's claim then Utd wouldn't have backtracked as quickly as they did last night.

And I doubt Shaw misheard, he was probably just being a whiner and twisted the officials words. If I had to take a stab in the dark, the ref probably said it wasn't a penalty and then added something along the lines of "can you image the reaction if I gave that against you". The official would need to be brain dead to admit to a player that he's making the wrong call on purpose.
