Greenlizard0 PL & Championship Football Thread ** spoilers ** [26th Feb - 4th March 2021]

I've posted a few good articles about our form over the last few weeks but due to the fact Klopp's been so successful, people blame injuries and stick their heads in the sand.

This version of Liverpool is the most tactically inept I've ever seen, it's so broken it's unbelievable we've got a manager that's actually won a trophy, let alone multiple trophies.
Never seen such a drop off in what appears to also be confidence or so many players form all nose diving at same time.

I could understand us maybe not winning the league following season but we haven't even put up a fight and could end up out of the top four is just poor

Whats quite funny is that despite Liverpools awful season they are still only 8 points off second place. That should tell you how awful all the "big" teams have been this season bar City.

High line doesn't work with these players, Thiago doesn't work without at least one defensive minded player alongside him and Firmino's finished.

I don't expect trophies every season and injuries have hurt us but I do expect our manager to at least try something different when the same thing fails to work week after week. If Klopp wants to be sacked in the summer he's doing a fantastic job.

Klopp will not get sacked in the summer.

I guess I’m an “injury head burier “ but this season has been a write off for a few months now. It is what it is. I’ve no idea what else it is off the pitch but on the pitch we’re done with the teams we’ve been putting out.

Is it you that constantly moans about the high line? When i say moan...i dont mean it in a negative context because its absolutely right. He's organising the defence like its Gomez and VVD and hasnt thought to change it.

Probably, I moan most weeks, even when we're winning. Obviously far easier sat in my armchair at home but when you don't have the players to play your preferred style of football, change your style of football rather than stand on the sidelines and watch other players come unstuck.

We could have played all week and still not scored. Our inability to defend long balls is a big concern, even at the weekend vs Sheffield Utd we looked suspect everytime they knocked the ball long but we've offered pretty much nothing going forward both today and vs Everton. We'll have games where we'll win simply because we've got a better keeper and forwards than most teams but it's difficult to see us winning games consistently through playing well at the moment. The team looks run ragged and disjointed.

Such as? I said after the Everton game that we needed to change the way we're playing until we get our CB's back but it's easier said than done when you've got so few options at the back and central midfield. Maybe had Phillips not gone down injured we could have done something different but without him there's not much more you can do than stick Fabinho at the back and go again with the same midfield 3.

Now you might say we should defend deeper, ok but look at how much we struggled to get on the front foot and attack in recent weeks. Had we been sitting 15 yards deeper we'd have likely looked even less dangerous going forward and can you honestly say you'd be confident that we'd have kept a clean sheet defending the edge of our 18 yard box?

I don't know what the answer is. Maybe, if by some miracle we can keep a couple of defenders fit we play some sort of 3 at the back with Fabinho as some sort of sweeper.

The problem when you have a load of injuries you have to play others more increasing their risk. I'm convinced that's why he took Salah off.

Could we play a back 5 with Miller lcb?

We have to try something as it's rank atm

This Liverpool team has been set up to play one way and one way only. High line, full backs pushing forward to provide width and assists, midfielders to press and provide cover for fullbacks and forwards to press and score. There is no plan B.

Injuries have wrecked our defence so we can't play a high line reliably, teams are defending deeper and packing the box so our fullbacks have been less effective, our midfield are dead so can't cover the fullbacks and our strikers are feeding on scraps and look equally dead.

I want us to try something different just for the sake of it now but, as I've said for a few weeks, next season looks equally as gruelling on the players and teams won't suddenly start leaving us more space in the box so we need a complete tactical overhaul if we want to compete at the top again.

I have no idea what that would look like but having a goal threat in midfield and a proper striker is a must for me. If Klopp doesn't want to try anything else, he'll end up leaving which, contrary to what my posts might make people think, I don't want. He's given me some of my best memories as a Liverpool supporter but this season has been rotten and I'm sad to see very little coming back from him.

Because teams defending deep vs us is a new thing? Defending deep vs us has been a thing for the past 4 years and the high press, full backs bombing forward system steam rolled 99.9% of teams that tried it in the previous 2 seasons.

And Klopp won't end up leaving. I cannot see him leaving in the middle of a contract and our owners would have to be brain dead to sack him. We've lost all 3 of our CB's for at least 3/4's of the season and as a result of them having to play at CB or being injured we've lost both our defensive midfielders for at least 3/4's of the season too. Throw in the other 140 injuries and there's not a massive amount a manager can do. We're picking what we've got and trying to make do.

Hopefully, and I've said this every few weeks since September, we can get a few players fully fit and start using Keita, Milner, Jota and Klopp can start making decisions rather than just picking the 11 adult players we have fit.

The high line only works when you are putting so much pressure on the opposition and squeezing them back so much that any ball they play over the top is a hail mary and your defenders are quick and able to snuff out that single player the opposition have left high. Liverpool aren't even close to being able to pull that off at the moment and yet Klopp persists with it. The opposition don't have a single player high, they have 2-3 and they have time to play that pass from the middle of the pitch.

Its a suicidal system when the midfield/forward line aren't doing what they need to do.
