I didn't manage to watch the Villa - City game but I've just seen the disallowed goal and while yes, it was the wrong decision, for the past 12 months supporters, players and managers have been complaining about lino's waiting so long before they eventually flag but this incident is exactly why they do. They're meant to wait until the attack is over and unfortunately for Villa, as soon as the ball goes behind Coutinho and he dribbles away from goal, that's the moment the lino's decided that phase of the attack ended and his flag goes up.

It's not much consolation for Villa fans but in the CL and I hope in the PL from next season there will be new technology for offsides that will prevent that from happening.

I think Artetas on about £275m and ETH is about £215m

From what I can make out, its about £335m for Arteta and around £220m for EtH. I would be surprised if he gets much more than £100m to spend next summer as well. By all accounts United were going to stop after Casemiro/De Jong either/or at around £140m. The disastrous first two games loosened the purse strings somewhat.

Yes but we know fans are idiots. I never understood why people complained about the flag not going up. Yes, occasionally a linesman didn't raise it when the guy was legitimately 2m offside but most of them were far more marginal and even a couple of feet off isn't that easy to be 100% sure about when you consider the pace of the modern game and where the offside might be comparing.

Fans just love a whinge and love to think that they can eyeball a decision at a hundred yards with pinpoint accuracy....after watching a slow motion replay paused at just the right moment.

To be fair, it's not just supporters. Martin Tyler bangs on about it all the time with his constant "somebody might get injured" line, I've seen VVD berating the lino for not flagging sooner and many a manager complaining about it after matches too.

It's a flaw with the current technology. These constant incidents where we play on, only to bring the play back for an offside 20 seconds earlier are legitimately frustrating but equally, no more frustrating than Villa fans feel right now where we didn't play on quite long enough.

I think my wee predicted of City and Liverpool in that order but no were near the point's total as pervious years looks to be on.
But people on here were so confident that both Haaland would get injured and miss many games and City would drop less points and it was all over after 4 games. I actually don't think they are watching City's games this year and just watching the BBC feed.

Isn't this what we want, to get away from seasons of 92 and 93 points where you had to win 14 games on the trot.

Just seen that villa offside call, there comes a point where it's understandable that people just stop accepting linesmen don't understand the basics of offside and start to think there's something far more sinister at work. Shocking sequence of events.

Oh come on! Yes, it wasn't offside but it's a million miles from being as bad a call as some people are making out. And out of interest, what do you mean by not understanding the basics of offside?

It wasn't a forward pass
Ah, you don't understand the basics of offside then. The direction the ball travels makes no difference to an offside, it's the position of the other attacking player. If the player who is receiving the ball is behind the play then they cannot be offside. If they're ahead of play then they can, regardless of whether it's a forwards, sideways or backwards pass.

The linesman made a mistake by judging Coutinho ahead of the last defender but it wasn't that bad a call, we've seen far worse than that over the years. It's just unfortunate that the ref blew up just before the ball ends up in the net, preventing VAR to correct the decision.

He's half a yard onside, the lino has a clear view, and the balls played backwards

I literally said he was onside in that post but it is not as bad a call as you're making out.

It's easy to see why you think it's a worse call than it is though and that's because you don't understand the offside law. The fact that the ball is played backwards changes absolutely nothing. The direction the pass travels is completely irrelevant to an offside decision - the only thing relevant is the position of the player who receives the ball and what you're getting confused with is the part of the rule that states that if the player is behind the ball then he cannot be offside.
