Greenlizard0 PL & Championship Football Thread ** spoilers ** [5th - 7th August 2022]

Deserved win for Brighton. Lots of work for EtH to do. Fingers crossed we will pick up a couple of players before the window closes and he can change the way we play quickly. This has exposed just how much work there is still left to do to even get us playing a semblance of the football he would want us to.

Agree, some decent signs but a tricky game and we struggled with it. Rome wasn't built in a day :p

My immediate concern is too much faith in an average squad - we need a lot of new players.

Again with the hyperbole. A devastating loss for United. We were a mess at the end of last season and we have a new manager trying to change the way we play completely. Brighton are a good side.

Devastating is about the last word I would use for getting beaten in the first game of the season by a good team.

It's ridiculous isn't it. Were people expecting us to suddenly thrash every team and be competing for the title? Even if we signed 2-3 more top players, top 4 would be pushing it.

Tricky game? Brighton lost two of their top players and still demolished us. I think the players are so stuck in their ways that they just need to get rid of most of the team and start a fresh with kids.

If Brighton can get themselves a decent striker I could see them competing for 6/7th.

I agree, still funny though. United still mid table, can’t get any higher than that if you you’re trotting out McFred. Hilarious.

Brighton are a good side, so yes it's a tricky game?

Are you watching the same game. Rashford has missed most of our best chances while Sancho set up one of those and has been part of a lot of our better play.

Fair do's it wasn't the best comparison but I do think Sancho has underperformed a lot. For us to buy a player for that sort of money you expect a bit more. It shows the risk of paying such a huge fee for a young player. I don't think he has the mentality to be a really top player.

Anyway it's not his fault he's playing in such a poor team. Very disappointing not to see any progression. In fact that was as bad as anything we saw last season. 3/10 for EtH in his first game - team selection basically Ole, subs Ole, tactics Ole/Ralf.

The thing is, these players aren't as bad as they are performing. I think they just haven't been coached properly for so long that they struggle to process what they should be doing as soon as there is any pressure on them. We reverted very quickly to all the bad habits from the past few seasons and those habits are so bad that they make it almost impossible to look good. You don't have options to pass, you are always choosing which man to mark because there is someone free that you have to worry about, the nearest pass is 20m away etc.

We were much better in the second half but still loads of work to do. One thing we do need is an upgrade to McFred. Even just one player would make a massive difference.

I think EtH is going to struggle to teach some of these players the positional and spacial awareness that has been taught to Ajax players from such an early age.

Great point for Brentford. We looked terrible for 60 mins, then made the most of our subs. All five came on, and made the first ones early - completely changed the game.

Felt unlucky to not get a penalty which made the game a lot harder than it needed to be, Sanchez had one of his standard flaps but made some decent saves outside of that.

I think it goes to show the difference between a well run club and a poorly run club, United have a very long way to go.

I think that is true to a degree, but some players are never going to be good enough. Central midfield as you say is a massively critical area - I'm not sure McT and Fred would start for any other team in the league.

I thought Martinez struggled a bit initially but looked pretty assured by the end of the game.
