Greenlizard0 PL & Championship Football Thread ** spoilers ** [8th - 10th February 2022]

Been watching football since the 80s and think that's actually the first time I've seen a player get two yellows with no delay inbetween... I mean I've seen someone get booked, then start applauding or giving lip to the ref and get a second yellow, but never a situation where they get no warning or infringment before the second yellow.

2nd yellow was no worse a foul than one in the first 15mins or so where wolves broke up an attack on the halfway line, it was weird like the ref had decided no yellows in the first 20mins of the game.

A yellow card is a caution. A warning and a second chance to a player not to do anything else that warrants a yellow or he will be sent off.

Martinelli was not given that chance.

Well I certainly never said "he's not going to play", all I said was that his case for the front 3 is getting weaker. Which I stand by, so you and I will simply have to disagree on this point
The point I was making is it shouldn't be a front 3 anymore. We have 5 options and it should be a case of horses for courses, depending on who we're playing, how we're going to play and who's in form. With the exception of Salah of course - he's nailed on to start.

So its a front 1 with a backup 4 :D

Softest double booking I've seen I think. Booked even though the throw in was successful, and if you look at the actual contact it's ridiculous. Hardly anything in it.

The fact he doesn't even know he has the first yellow is even more of a joke. Can you appeal two yellows? I'm glad they still got the three points.

I’ve say this a lot...just because the forward has a shot it doesn’t mean you can take them out.

Nothing given. From behind, with force and high oh and in the box oh but he’s had a shot? Fair game then eh.

Absolute nonsense.

Just seen the 2 yellows for martinelli, quite funny. Think they are both yellows to be fair so a sending off is 'correct' although it's unusual for a player to pick them up in the same phase of play.

You are correct, it is absolute nonsense

How many times do we all see goalkeepers missing the ball and taking out players after they've had a shot? If they were all punished, we'd be looking at least 5 penalties a game.

Clutching at straws there Rob :p If following that logic if the 2nd tackle was two footed and a straight red, he wouldn't have been able to send him off?

Not sure why so many are struggling with Martinelli's double yellow. It's clearly the right decision as there were two separate bookable offences.

Just because the ref couldn't dish out the first yellow because play had continued (which happens all the time), it doesn't exonerate you from further yellow card offences.

The argument that Martinelli didn't know he'd be booked for the first one is poor as he should have known or at least considered it, since it is in fact a yellow card offence.

It's like speed cameras on a stretch of road. You can't commit an offence then not be punished for subsequent offences until you know about the first punishment.

That would never work. Otherwise you could drive for miles at 100mph and only get one ticket, or run away from the ref FIFA 96 style and slap everyone else on the pitch in the face and get away with all of them apart from the first.

The only counter argument people seem to have is that they haven't seen it before, which is hardly relevant. Footballers invent new ways to be stupid all the time; doesn't make the ref wrong.

Then give a penalty.

How many times do you see a player make a pass then is caught late outside the area and a foul is given?

all the time.

Whats the difference?

Now Neves is having a pop at us for celebrating too much at the end

I wish people would just **** off and stop taking digs at us all the time.

You say you're not sure then you go on to explain why people are struggling with it. Whether the decision was right or wrong, the fact is we have never seen a situation like this in recent history and while the circumstances were uncommon, I'm certain that there would have been other incidents like it in the past which haven't resulted in two yellows being dished out.

So while it was the correct decision in law, you can certainly understand why some people are struggling to accept it.

On a more lighthearted note, at what point do we start referring to this Arsenal side in the same way we did Tony Pulis's Stoke side? Their disciplinary record is far worse than your Stokes & Burnley's of this world.
