Greenlizard0 PL Football Thread Final Day ** spoilers ** [26th July 2020]

post 246, first sentence.

He said we'd have more points without injuries and with Bruno for the whole season. He didn't say anything about next year being our year. He then went on to say we'd have more years of being around top 4. Perhaps you need to read the post again.

Maybe I just misunderstood but I thought you were moaning at him for the 20 point think?

He said that after I said the nobody said that lol. Weirdly I can't predict the future.

20 pts is on the high end but it seems reasonable that with Pogba and Fernandes for the first half of the season we'd have been in a much better situation points wise.

This seems to come down to the usual thing of United fans saying we're playing better and changes have been positive and other fans jumping on us with the usual your players are only good enough for bottom half teams and you're not going to win next year how deluded are you.

There is a trend in football fans nowadays where if you aren't the best you're ****. A player is either the best in the league or he's not even good enough to be fourth choice. A lot in this thread are very guilty of it.

I didn't exclude United fans, I said football fans.

I think saying a big chunk wanted Pogba gone for his performances is not true, most were unhappy with the off the field stuff with his agent and family. Again with the ridiculous hyperbole though.

As for Fernandes, he's clearly one of the better players in the league right now. With Eriksen gone and now Silva leaving he's probably the best 10 in the league. Omnomnom has a bucket load of bias towards United players as can be seen by his comments about Maguire. You're just incapable of commenting on them

No that was directed against om.

Regarding Pogba I think some wanted him to leave (I'm reluctant to say most as much like you I don't know what the majority of our very large fanbase thinks) when it wasn't clear whether he was committed to the club. Now that he seems to be happier here with the club moving in a better direction isn't it understandable people want him to say? Whether people accept it or not he's one of the best midfielders in the world.

As far as Maguire, the fee is irrelevant. It's sunk cost, when saying whether a defender has had a good season or not it doesn't matter what their transfer fee is. Should we be saying Rashford is infinitely better than Martial because he was cheaper? of course not, a player's performance is judged against their peers no matter what price they were. Maguire is one of the best defenders in the league, up there with VVD and Laporte as the top three probably.

There is like 9 fans on here, they're hardly representative of the millions fanbase we have.

As I said, that is all speculation without much basis. If you're seriously comparing dancing at a wedding with playing professional football then...

There were some people on here who said he was faking it and would never play for Utd again and...oh look he's playing for Utd again. I think he simply wants to be at a top club and the direction things were taking last summer were concerning as to whether we could get there. Much the same as when Rooney asked for a transfer.

Pogba will always be judged harsher than any other player, for some reason people expect him to be Kante, Xavi and Nedved all in one. No other midfielder gets these kind of expectations put on them. The media put it out because they know the ABU crowd will lap it up and sadly it works.

If Pogba was refusing to play then it would be leaked, no way is that kind of thing kept secret.

Pogba has consistently been our best player, I don't think any more was expected of him. Rather the disappointments have been that until now we haven't been able to get the quality around him. No world class player can win competitions single handedly.

So I've been missing the weekly articles about Kepa have I? He cost almost as much as Pogba yet it's Chelsea and nobody cares. Everybody wants to read about Utd.

And switch KdB and Pogba around and you'd be saying the same thing about him. You're missing the fact it's a team game. One player cannot drag the team up if the rest of the team isn't performing. KdB is surrounded by the deepest squad in world football in a side that is specifically set up around the way he plays with one of the best managers in the world. Pogba had to put up with a few seasons under negative nancy Mourinho and now he's in a team that is still in transition. We've had a lot of players leave and join and have a very young squad. He also plays much deeper than De Bruyne, a fairer comparison for him would be Fernandes.

Pogba has dragged us through plenty of periods of poor performance too, most notably the comebacks against City or Newcastle in the last few years. The 'ambling around' stuff is mostly the media and isn't backed up by stats.

The way I look at it is, could we have bought anyone else better for that money? I don't see that we could.

Well all three of those cost more, and of those Kante only wanted Chelsea. Not convinced Bernardo Silva would fit us but I would have liked Mane sure.

Well hang on, I said I didn't think there was a player we could have got that could do what Pogba did for us. You then named 3 players who play completely different positions. I'm still not sure there was a player we could have signed that would be better. The only ones I can think that even moved in that timeframe are Kroos and Thiago, and both of those had already moved by then.

Obviously I mean in the same position, if we need a midfielder buying a winger is no good. Right now we need a right winger, should we give up on Sancho and buy a left back instead?

Pogba at least had some weight and a reputation behind him. Even United fans knew signing Maguire was underwhelming. That is the transfer that needs questioning imo.

Not really, we needed a left sided centre back and a leader and he's filled that role. The fee was a little high but again, who was available that was better? He's turned our defence around and made it one of the best in the league.

If your house needed completely refurbishing, including needing a new TV and I offered you a 32 inch Sharp for 4 times it's worth would you buy it just because all the Sony's and Samsungs were sold out?

Would you really be sat on the floor in your empty living room, watching the game on your £4k Sharp 32 inch and be defending the decision with "well I needed a tv"? :D
We weren't looking to build a team in one summer. You don't buy a bunch of average players and then look to compete for titles. Is it better to do what LvG did and buy a large number of cheaper players and then see them leave over the next 2/3 years because they aren't good enough?

You mean I can change my opinion after seeing a player play? SHOCK

We've gone from conceding 31 goals more than the leaders to 3 goals more. And that is with our GK having a relatively poor season. Everyone but you can see the improvement Maguire has brought to our defense.

We had already waited for a year to buy a defender. It was clear we needed a partner for Lindelof with the amount of injuries the rest of our defenders had received and Smalling not being the fit for what type of football we wanted to play.

You keep acting like Maguire has been a poor signing. How do you explain how much better our defense has been this year?

You realise players make mistakes right? Sometimes a striker will miss a shot and I'll say he should have scored that. It doesn't mean I don't think he's good enough and should be replaced. Honestly I don't think you even watch us Om...

Also at no point have I said he's up there with VVD, not sure why you keep claiming that. VVD is the best defender in the league right now, never said otherwise. I'm not sure if you're lacking comprehension or just trolling me.

Ok I'm blocking you. You're just trolling now and not actually responding to any points I'm raising. Quite happy to have a discussion with Baz because he actually has a discussion. You just raise strawmen constantly.
