Greenlizard0 Premier League Football Thread ** spoilers ** [10th - 12th February 2024]

I know Neville talks some **** but did he really just question whether Spurs would have preferred a Villa win? :D
It’s a bit academic in some respects. Spurs are playing Villa on 10th March but April is a bit of a stinker playing Newcastle, Man City, Arsenal then Liverpool in consecutive games.

I see you think Spurs managed to shed their Spursiness when they sold Kane. I still think there will be some changes in the top 4 before the end of the season.
Admittedly I have overlooked that but I do think Ange's 'what will be will be, it's just how we play mate' attitude will help them in that regard and it doesn't change the sides chasing them. Villa are a good side but they'll have games like today where they dominate the match but can't find a way to win due to a lack of goalscorers and Utd just aren't a particularly good side.

Thought United where pretty awful for the most part, especially considering they where playing with a 12th man.

Nevertheless thought Villa where great and just relieved we put in a solid performance after Wednesdays **** show. Gotta take your chances at the end of the day and if we had we'd have been up 4 at half time.

I wouldn't say we've turned a corner, but we have improved.

In the context of the season though, we're still way off it.
Kinda sums it up. We rode our luck today but importantly we showed the application to compete and ultimately a beat a team that are above us and better than us. We earned the win and several times this season we have not. Villa are the only team that's been above us we have beaten so I'm happy with that. Other positives are that Mainoo continues to impress, Onana actually made some saves and despite losing Shaw and Martinez we held out at the back. Luton up next I think.

I'll take that, but we certainly didn't play well for long periods. Villa had some good opportunities in the final third, if they were a little sharper e.g. Bailey's pass to Ramsey, it could have been a different game.

I question getting ahead of ourselves and saying our next couple of games are winnable, on paper they're winnable but how many times have we won a game and then lost straight after? I mean one example was the last time we beat Villa, fantastic comeback and then we lost to Forrest.

4th away win on the trot for Newcastle. They were brilliant at times and absolutely woeful at others. That is 4 times in the last two games we have lost the lead, both against sides that are tipped for relegation.
Still though, good to see we can still score goals when the strikers aren't firing and I think Howe answered some of his critics in completely changing the way we played, certainly while in possession at least. Pushes Bruno further up the pitch and look what happens...
Happy Barnes is continuing his comeback. We look a real threat with both him and Gordon on the wings. The middle of the park though we still look weak. Bruno has clearly been told not to put a challenge in as he's on 9 bookings, Miley and Longstaff seemingly uncapable of one. Bit daft for him to celebrate on the advertising hoarding though. Had he fell off it's an instant yellow. Quite a bit of love between him and the supporters though.

Aside from Arsenal away all our fixtures are winnable between now and end of March. Lets see if we can capitalise on them.

You've actually got the same 3 fixtures as Villa but in a different order. You've got Fulham at home where we get Forrest. Kind of fortuitous really...

For all the talk of a United come back I still think we're more likely to come out with the lions shares of points from those 3 fixtures. Even though we're in the midst of a bit of a slump we look the more focused and well rounded side generally. Yesterday was just one of those games, any other given day we could have come away with at very least a point.

Beating the teams around you or at least getting something from the game is usually key at the top. Villa should have easily had all 3 points yesterday and only have them selves to blame. Shame really they play some really good stuff!

You talking about Harry Maguire or Lindelof at LB being our 12th man?

Imagine complaining about a 12th man when Cash managed to get away with diving to get Casemiro a booking and stopping a counter attack without a yellow. He could have been sent off twice for multiple bookings.

Granted it was a disgraceful dive that even I spotted all the way up in the DE stand, but for that one missed yellow on United's counter there where about 4 for Villa. Not too mention the relentlessly dull pleading to the ref from Fernandes. Only seemed to be an issue when Lenglet decided to have a crack as well, couldn't reach for his pocket quick enough then.

You generally get yellows for acts of dissent, not the slow dribble of whinging that Fernandes deploys. Quite how you can suggest the ref was our "12th man" yesterday is quite frankly ridiculous.
