Greenlizard0 Premier League Football Thread ** spoilers ** [20th - 25th May 2023]

I know he's a bit of a clown like character and has a howler in him but he's a much better keeper than he's given credit for and would an upgrade on De Gea.
Those howlers seem to pop up multiple times a season and his distribution is horrific - and probably the main reason I dont think any 'top' teams would be in for him in the window, he does like a save for the cameras tho. Clubs should be looking at the porto/milan keeper or even Khelleher ( :p) if 50 million plus is being bandied around.

Pickford's distribution is horrific? It may be down this season but then he's playing out to players who haven't wanted the ball anywhere near them :p

He's obviously not Alisson or Ederson level but he's good with his feet and his distribution is nowhere near "horrific".

I think he'd do okay at United but not the calibre of keeper they need to really push on.

obviously, I'm basing this on when the ev play Liverpool, but I've lost count of the amount of times a nice simple ball played out to the fb will end up going out for a throw in. He also plays balls to players under a lot of pressure. imo his distribution is amongst the worst in the league.

totally agree

Great we're going to have to put up with reading your posts about how corrupt UEFA and the refs are and don't want Newcastle in the competition until November at the latest :p
Don’t get me started.

The make the PL look like Snow White.

De Gea to Pickford is a side step at best. Both capable of good reflex saves, both capable of howlers.

Has Pickford got better distribution? Maybe.

Would be OK at a low-ish cost...

Also the guy is kinda right they spent more time talking about City then they did for the match that was actually on.
The first 30minutes of the programme seemed to be about something else but the programme Schedule said Newcastle Vs Leicester.
Absolutely dire coverage on all the UK channels for football IMO, we get the worse pundits and commentators.

I'm struggling to think of a worse keeper in PL history than Robles and I remember Brad Jones!!
Ward?
Is Leicester's keeper like this every game? If so it's unbelievable they aren't already relegated.
No, for most of the season we fielded Ward. He's arguably even worse.

Had Rodgers not driven away Schmeichel, or Top ditched Rudkin for someone who actually knew how to plan contract negotiations and overrule when necessary we'd have Iversen learning from Schmeichel and the latter would have got us more points than we currently have by virtue of actually being vaguely good between the sticks.

If De Gea were to leave on a free and we got Pickford I doubt it would really cost anything in the long run. Pickford would quite happily play for 100k a week and De Gea is on 350k.

I doubt he would come for £100k a week and we would still ultimately have a goalkeeper that wasn't truly top tier. I also ******* hate the guy. Mouthy **** would do my head in watching him scream at the defence every time an attacker has the audacity to come into our half of the pitch.

It's not the mouthing off that should worry you, it's the way he stands there laughing after he's thrown one into the net in the 90th minute.

Anyone got any rough numbers how much is a top 4 finish is worth?

champions league qualification and prize money?

How long is a piece of string. You get around £2m per place in PL prize money so the difference between finishing 5th and 4th is not much compared to finishing 17th and 4th. As for CL money, that depends on loads of factors. There's fixed prize money - you get around £14m for qualifying then there's prize money for each win/draw in the group stage and then more prize money depending how far you progress. There's the coefficient payment which is based on your 10 year UEFA coefficient - Newcastle's will almost certainly be the lowest in the CL so you won't get much there. And then there's the tv market pool but that depends on how far you progress relative to the rest of the PL sides - in theory you could get more from this by getting knocked out in the 1/4s (if the rest of the PL sides go out in the group stages) than making the final (if the other finalist is a PL side and the other two make the semis).

edit: the lowest ranked side will get approx £10m from the coefficient payment and worst case you'd get around £8m from the market pool. So very rough, worst case scenario, if Newcastle were to get knocked out in the groups, you'd be looking at around £35-40m total. Spurs will have earned around £55m by reaching the last 16.

edit2: I miscalculated the coefficient payment, it could actually be as low as £1m, not £10m.
