Greenlizard0 Premier League Football Thread ** spoilers ** [21st - 22nd September 2024]

Inconsistency of the rule is the issue for me. That and they very rarely let quick freekicks be taken anyway.

Arsenal fume will be hilarious nonetheless.

This is the thing. Presumably the rule is there to prevent/ punish dissent, but if that's the case then there should be scope for the ref to decide what the player has done. As with the Rice one, it's so unclear what happened there, and an automatic yellow is completely disproportionate

Edit: apparently it was for delaying the restart. He's kicked it about 5 yards in the end, and Bernardo was still rolling around on the floor

'Delaying the restart' comes from the neeks in the VAR room that'll waste 2 minutes of gametime checking a clearly onside goal.

In respect to the specifics of the decision maybe but not Arsenal supporters whining about any injustice. He deservedly was sent off regardless of the reason given for the 2nd yellow.
If that was Liverpool, you'd be saying that it was a 50/50 yellow card and he was a bit lucky to get away with it, but that that doesn't justify the crap rules leading to the second yellow

Maybe but he wasn’t lucky this time, he got booked and the challenge combined with kicking the ball away meant he can hardly complain.

FWIW I do think he knew what he was doing in respect to kicking the ball away too. There was a stat the other day that showed Arsenal were the biggest offenders in the league when it came to time wasting. When you’re clearly pushing the rules to the limit as a tactic, as Arsenal do, you can’t complain when the rules come back to bite you on the arse.

But you seem to be justifying one refereeing mistake with a second mistake (out of a poor set of rules). Yes, Trossard probably ultimately ended up where he should have been (ie off), but the way he got there should open the refereeing team (and the people who make the rules) up to more criticism, not less
