Greenlizard0 Premier League Football Thread ** spoilers ** [3rd - 5th February 2024]

Just back from the game, and if you were to offer Toon fans 4 points out of Villa away and Luton at home, you likely would have snapped hands off.
Tonight though was as bad as I have seen us defensively, and it’s games like this that will get Howe replaced. Against Villa, Bailey had Burn on toast and it only took a 1 goal for him to adjust, today whoever was playing on Luton’s right hand side had burn on toast from the 1st minute and Howe did nothing until Luton went 4-2 up, not something you would see from an elite manager and with no disrespect to Luton not against as side of Luton’s calliber, Thought Luton were outstanding today and I have never seen such an aggressive press from a team.

Probably, however after doing all the hard work at villa park, we really should be picking up 3 at home.

That’s one way of looking at it. Another would be picking up a single point and conceding 5 goals over two games against a team who have been odds on for relegation since May last year. Luton just the latest side to purposely target Burn and they won’t be the last. Howe said in the post game presser that he kept him on to help negate their height threat from set plays.

Massively entertaining game although can’t say I particularly enjoyed it. Some positives though, Barnes looked good as did Wilson. We looked much more structured with those two on the pitch. Howe had no option really other to play Gordon up top who looked his best when he pushed out wide. Hopefully his injury isn’t too bad.

What’s more of a worry is we’re now 3 without a win at home and Howe isn’t seeming to learn that Burn is being targeted, if he’s adamant on keeping burn on, he needs to change formation, every team in the league now will just keep putting the ball down our left hand side knowing that goals will come from it.

Luton have two main threats set pieces and pace on the break. To counter the set pieces you want Burn on not so much the pace in transaction. Burn was completely at fault for one goal yesterday. giving away the penalty. Not the others. Burn was brilliant at Villa up until Baily came on in the second half. Can't blame Howe on starting Burn but you can blame him on not making the change quicker as it was clear he really couldn't cope with the fastest player in the league.

Bruno was a lot more reserved versus Fulham and villa but everything yesterday was just nuts lol!! Way to open.

That goal from Barnes on his weak foot was sweet. Hope Gordon isn't bad!! One in one out.

hopefully at forest we see Willock and Isak!!

I suppose we're about to find out if the improved performance in the Wolves game (although we almost made a mess of it) was a corner turned... probably not.

Same Starting XI but Maguire in for Varane.

Anyone else think Ross Barkley should be in the England squad for the Euros if this season's form continues ? It's not an exaggeration to say he has been one of the best midfielders in the league this year, remarkable consistency and all his best performances have come against top opposition.

I should hate him for how he left Everton but can't help but admire the huge turnaround he's had this season, to the point where he now looks like the player many thought he would become earlier in his career before injuries and bad transfers derailed him.

I think he would be a great option off the bench for England.

If the game management can be sorted i think, with Martinez at the back and Mainoo installed in midfield. United are able to turn the corner. Garnacho looked streets ahead of what Anthony has been able to offer on the wing.

Feels like it's took him to finally be humble and not the big time Charlie he thought he was to find his real potential.
