Greenlizard0 Premier League Football Thread ** spoilers ** [3rd Dec - 5th Dec 2024]

Well I liked the first half performance, we actually looked organised. Still an issue with creativity in the final third, we didn't have much on the right. Arsenal didn't really have any clear cut chances in open play, but we really struggled defending their corners. I didn't mind the second half performance, I think our bench isn't strong and we tried to chase the game.

No expectation to beat Arsenal at home

I'm not too salty about this. I wouldn't expect us to get much from this game. De Ligt, Mazraoui and Ugarte have all been decent which suggests better recruitment. Add Amad and Yoro to that and we have a decent nucleus. The coach has had a look at almost every player now which is also good as he will be forming a view on who will work best in this system. Onto the next one.

Four in a row vs Man Utd, doesnt quite feel as good as it should these days

Now you made me bring out the statistics lol

Need one more to match current record

It's going to take me a while to calm down before I can sleep tonight.

On the one hand, that performance was a dramatic improvement over the West Ham and Palace games — like, how is it even the same team they were playing so much better. On the other hand, we reverted to type for both of Liverpool's first two goals — really sloppy passing and we got punished for it. Even the third goal we stood around watching them pass it about on the edge of the 18-yard box. But you can't really account for the class of Salah.

So I'm going to take the positives out of the game and hope we can play like that a bit more moving forward.

GG Liverpool, I really enjoyed that one.
You nailed it, the defensive sloppiness is still evident. For the big difference, as I mentioned in the early pages of the thread, is that the better teams come and play their own game against us and it opens things up. It allows Newcastles more creative players to do a bit more. Look how high a line Liverpool were holding when defending - Isaks goal came from that and was a perfect example. Against the teams that play the "low block" he's getting that ball 20 yards closer tot he goal line (if he even gets it at all) and there's just no space or options for him.
The win against Chelsea in the cup then the Arsenal win was going to kick start the season. Then we play a couple of sides who defend deeper with no adventure in them (WH & Palace, both in or around the bottom 3 at the time) and all of a sudden Newcastle are bang out of ideas and easy to defend against. Results against these bigger teams are great, don't get me wrong, but they don't define our season or league position. Teams like Newcastle need to be putting away the mid and lower placed sides in this league and this season Howe is really struggling to find a way to do that. Still, cracking game though.

Right we had to wait until Horse mouth packed his bags to stop getting beat by Liverpool and now we just have to wait until Salah retires before we beat them.

Unplayable has to be under consideration for the ballon thingie.

@Vandle playing Bruno as the 8 and Sandro has the deeper 6 will help that.

That was always going to be the hard part. Switching from a team that’s good in transition and counter attacking to one good in possession. We don’t have the players yet.

Bruno is our most creative midfielder whilst also being the best player to bring the ball out of defence. You can see Howe has been trying to find the answers but that’s the best our midfield has looked all season.

Sandro has looked fantastic at that deeper role since the Chelsea game before Howe threw Longstaff back into the team.

That was the Gordon of last season. He tormented the Liverpool defence all game. Isak has been gradually getting back to his old self.

There’s a few players that don’t seem motivated and a few that are long in the tooth. Team needs some fresh faces. A flexible RW/CAM and a CB. There hasn’t been any real fresh faces into that 11 in a while.

Wonderful game. You seen Liverpool setting traps for the press but we wouldn’t bite. We pressed when we wanted to and in the area’s of real threat.
