Greenlizard0 Premier League Football Thread ** spoilers ** [9th - 13th March 2024]

That is surprising, we were very high despite maintaining an abysmal (for fans) net spend.
Offloading Hendo/Fabinho/Bobby/Mane probably did a huge amount for that tbf.

Arsenal in prime position here though to make up for last season.

Battered Liverpool at Emirates, should have battered them after first half at Anfield (still should've conceded a penalty though) and also convincingly beat City at home.
They've done it in the big games which is very un-arsenal like, would be huge to do it at the Emirates.
No FA Cup is a big boon and not that they'll be hoping but potentially no Europe could be big also to keep avoiding any injuries

Seems set up for an incredible race now and then at the end of the day City wins and no one cares once again :D :(

Two best managers in the Premiership era going head to head with an almost equal record, what's not to love.

Surprised this didn’t triggered anyone. Fergie still #1

He’ll (Klopp) be a loss for the league though, bit of a moaner. I seen that this is the first time that 2 managers have gone head to head that have won everything for the club.

Other than Jose I can’t think of anyone who even got close? Carlo, Wenger and Mancini missed the League cup and European cup.

Shankley won UEFA cup, no league cup. Paisley/Fagan no fa cup.

Yesterdays game is going to haunt my week. Probably the most important match since our playoff game, pretty much guarantees us 5th place, keeps momentum going for Conference league home leg and we didn't even show up. I've never felt so abysmal leaving a match. We've thrown the luxury of breathing space and will spend the rest of the season looking over our shoulder.

I've tried to convince myself that the McGinn red was harsh and that maybe on another day it passes as a yellow, but I've argued for years that headless tackles like that should be straight reds, so hey ho. Loosing him completely guts our Midfield going forward and puts so much pressure on Luiz and young Tim to overperform in the next three games. If we can get three points from those games I'd be amazed.

Shows you how important Bailey has been to our runs of form this season. He was completely off yesterday. I don't know if it was that Van de Ven had him in his pocket pretty much from the start or what, but he never got going and he looked bloody terrified on the ball.

No idea why Emery went 5 at the back either. Perhaps he was worried too much about the lack of Kamara and knew we where likely to loose in the midfield, but we've been pretty hellish all season when teams press high. We can deal with that sort of pressure against 'weaker' sides but Tottenham have the type of quality that will own every mistake you make at the back and we made PLENTY yesterday. We've come accustom to playing these sorts of sides at their own game and when we give them too much respect we ALWAYS loose. If it's not end to end in games like that then we'll never get a shout.

Horrible. A match I cannot forget quickly enough.

I thought I saw something recently which showed City and Liverpool having loads more. I can't find it and it appears I was talking rubbish as everything says the opposite.
Nah, I saw something similar on twitter recently too- it's been mentioned a fair bit but our wage bill jumps depending on if we win anything as a lot of the contracts are incentive based.

I’d still rather be in Villa’s position that Spurs’. Tottenham have still got to play Arsenal, Man City, Liverpool and Chelsea so that game in hand isn’t going to count for much.

We've got the same, the difference being the only game we'll have at home is Liverpool where Spurs will have City and Arsenal. Even if we don't bomb the rest of the season, it could come down to goal difference which we had the lions share of until yesterday...

Don't want to be overly negative, but we've had plenty of chances to secure CL in the past few weeks and we've blown them. That supposed Netflix documentary on us is getting plenty of misery porn at the moment...

Gallagher just explained that VAR can only point out suspected simulation to the ref if the referee has given the penalty. Because the ref didn’t give Havertz the penalty, VAR can only confirm the refs decision. It can’t be recommending second yellows for diving.

What has he said about the non pen for Liverpool yesterday, considering he said the Celtic red last week was correct all be it a soft one I guess he has said stonewall pen

@Pigeon_Killer did Diaz start to convince you he can beat people again :D? Was more Suarez like with the dribbling that any sort of pace but what a fun second half he was to watch (excl the misses lol)

I thought this was common knowledge.
Don't recall anyone expecting VAR to intervene for a dive that wasn't given as a penalty/freekick previously.

Usual waffle, thought it was a pen but can understand why it wasnt because he got the ball 1st even tho

A) it's irrelevant if he got the ball 1st its still a foul as per pl rules

And more importantly

B) he didn't get the ball 1st

The only slight mitigation I can think is that it seems that it was the side of the foot rather than studs. However, definitely seen them given and my feeling is it should have been given.

Lots of talk saying Mcgin should be a yellow and the game is soft if that is a red..etc. I think challenges like that have to be red, otherwise it is a free pass to kick lumps out of a player with yellow as the ceiling. It clearly wasn’t a missed timed tackle and went with the intent to leave a mark on the player due to frustration. Very different to a professional foul when you just want to break up play for me (as much as I hate a cynical foul and would like them to be punished more). What did others think?

This seasons figures won't be available for around 10-12 months but as of last season we were paying over £100m per season more than Arsenal. Both sides will no doubt have lots of clauses in contracts relating to CL qualification which will see that difference narrow but I'd be amazed if we weren't still paying more than Arsenal this season.

The one I saw was up to the end of 22/23 season, I'm not entirely sure if it included the likes of Saka's bumper new paydeal as an example.

Arsenal's 22/23 wages were £235m, ours were £374m. As I said, the majority of players in both squads will have clauses relating to CL qualification which will see Arsenal's rise (along with pay increases to the likes of Saka etc) and ours fall however I'd be surprised if that £140m gap completely closes.

Red all day long, no idea if he meant to 'leave one on him' but if I was a villa fan I'd be ****** they are now missing a pretty important player for a large chunk of the run in
