Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [1 - 3rd December 2012]

i've said this before and I'll say it again, the word cheat implies getting away with something. Suarez doesn't get away with anything.

To suggest someone is a cheat doesn't mean they've got to get away with it. Was Ben Johnson a cheat in the 1988 Olympics?

You can argue that someone isn't a very good cheat if they don't get away with it perhaps (not sure why you'd want to but it's an option) but if they are attempting to cheat you can't argue that they're not a cheat because they failed to pull off the deception successfully. To be a cheat isn't determined by the success of the cheating, it's the intention in conjuction with carrying out the cheating action.

This isn't specifically about Suarez, it applies to anyone who cheats or tries to - this may or may not include Suarez, I don't watch him often enough to form a fair judgement.

Still quite funny seeing all the spuds crawling out the wood work trying to paint Bale as some sort of saint (because he is a stay at home kind of guy?), conversly ignoring the charity work Luis does both in his native country and in Africa.

In fact you could say the spurs fans in here have some sort of victim complex.....

No it doesn't, attempted cheating is still the same thing.

The only thing that is hypocritical is no one calls cynical fouls/last man tackle/conceding penalties cheating. Also in how big a profile match you did it in matters as well, which really it shouldn't, cheating is cheating.

2 - 1, good result for us. 19 points now and unbeaten in 8, hopefully we can pick up a few more points before the new year, and just enjoy the run in till the end of the season.

Really? I didn't see too much division when Ronaldo was at Utd. Similarly, when Beckham came back from the '98 World Cup as them most hated man in England, the support he got from Utd fans was 10 fold what it was before. And Cantona before that. On the whole football fans stick by there players through thick and thin - more so when that player gives 100% every single game for them.

The abuse Beckham got wasn't justified, and I am saying that as a person that has a dislike for him, so UTD fans were right to back him.
Cantona helped UTD win their first league in 26 years and was someone who transcended football. Of course you are right that the support that he got from UTD fans was OOT but he had done a lot to earn it. Suarez received it when all he had done was drag LFC name through the mud.

But as the name suggests, 'football fans' aren't the most rational of people...

All situations are the same, the more opposition fans hate your players, the more you support them. You can't say things are any different between Ronaldo and Suarez. That Suarez makes him look like a saint is irrelevant really.

I think there is room for debate on the issue; you could argue that nothing covered by and punished in accordance (with no advantage gained) with the laws on the game is cheating. I think some people have a view that 'cheating' refers to an attempt to deceive officials i.e. crafty handball, diving, time-wasting, taking a throw-in from the wrong place etc.

Taking your viewpoint a step futher, over 99% of professional players are cheats because at some point they've given away a foul, or a handball, or been offside etc.
