Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [10th - 15th April 2015]

Really weird match. For the first 30 mins we were seemingly finding ways to not put the game to bed - us of last season would have been 5 or 6 up within the first half hour. For the 15 minutes either side of HT we then seemed to be finding ways to let Newcastle back into the game. Once we got the 2nd it was comfortable though.

I thought Mason was appalling all game and got more decisions wrong than right today but the decision not to give Newcastle a pen was ridiculous and although it didn't really change anything, so was only giving Sissoko a 2nd yellow rather than a straight red. Both decisions he was looking straight at from a few yards away.
Bye bye :D

Absolutely shocking challenge and very cowardly. Hope he gets snapped in another match for that.

IIRC it was him that almost broke Allen's leg in the game at St James' earlier in the season and got away with it all together.
I usually despise all of that stay classy rubbish but that was a really nice touch from Anfield for Guti. Good stuff.

You and Purdy must be related somewhere down the line.

I think we can all agree on that one, like. Not even sure if Palace fans have Internet.

By the way, where has that Suarez lad gone? Was he perma'd?

Got no problem with people going in full blooded and mistiming tackles but he knew exactly what he was doing because he had time to think about it. His reaction to just walk without raging spoke volumes.

Lucky the Lovren tackle on Can didn't cause any damage either. Imagine a Toure and Lovren pairing at the back. Hope we see the back of both in the summer although I'm guessing we'll have to pay someone to take them off our hands now.

I'm the eternal optimist so I'm hoping Lovren still might come good. He reminds me a lot of Skrtel in his early days, specifically when he played alongside Carra. Alongside Hyypia or Agger he looked fine but when Skrtel played with Carra (up until Carra's last season) he looked all over the place and a nervous mess.

Like Skrtel, Lovren's got the raw materials to be a great CB he's just been too erratic. Earlier in the season I got the impression that he was too eager to impress and tried to live up to Rodger's talk that he was going to come in and be the dominant CB we need, and he was trying to win anything and everything. Now he just looks a nervous mess.

He's still fairly young by CB standards and hopefully by next season he'd have settled down a bit and can almost start again.

He doesn't seem to have a brain though. In a 5 minute spell he tackled Can, headed the ball to the Newcastle player and ran half way up the pitch leaving a massive gap in the middle of the defence. On the flip side he's tall, strong and good in the air but then so's a chimney. Far too erratic far too often for me unfortunately. Would certainly expect him to look miles better than Toure and he hasn't tbh.

Dominated the game as usual against Newcastle (bar the early season hiccup), and picked up the customary 3 points. That back 3 though /shudder. Migs having to bail us out yet again with some fantastic saves.

Nuff said about the 'tackle', awful

Lovren having the raw materials? except he has no positional sense, weak in the tackle, no timing, poor header of the ball and is a poor passer of the ball. Terrible CB and a signing.

Like I said, he's erratic but that side of the game can be improved on. Look at Skrtel today compared to Skrtel of 4 years ago. Lovren's biggest problem is the price we paid meaning that we expect him to be the finished article straight away.

You're being overly harsh on him for the Can incident. The ball's ended up lobbed up in the air in our box and you expect your CB's to go for it. It was just unfortunate he's landed on Can's ankle.

Yeah the Can thing was just unlucky but what will happen when you're just playing like this/having that sort of luck.

I quite like the guy, more so after his penalty miss but resigning myself to the fact he just won't come good more and more sadly.
