Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [13th - 15th August 2011]

It's interesting that people slated Fernando Torres because he wasn't performing when he joined Chelsea, yet people are quick to defend a keeper who looks way out of his depth at Manchester United. Of course the price tag is probably one of the main reasons, but De Gea is United's first choice goalkeeper, so I think it's even in that respect.

Well there's a difference between going about a year under performing than two games with a 20 year old in a new league..

I'm not sure it's fair to compare a 20 year old goalkeeper who moved for ~18 million to a new League to a player who was a proven goalscorer (up until 18 months ago) who's established in that League and who moved for 50 million.

Two very different signings, especially as Torres is 5 years older and has been in the perm for that time.

Pretty stupid comparison tbh  Age, new league and new country are all valid reasons for De Gea being a little shaky at the start of the season. Torres was a proven goalscorer in the prem before he joined Chelsea.

That's a good argument

Whelen came from Sheffield Wednesday and he's a good passer of the ball, he's not as good as some of the midfielder that the top sides have but he's a good passer of the ball. Whitehead again is a capable passer of the ball, you sound like you only employ these players to hassle the opposition midfield which I think does them and the fans a discredit, they're better then that.

I wasn't aware I said I'd expected you to play carpet football ()
What stopping you playing free flowing football? You have the solid defence to build from?

I don't expect a side like Stoke to pass round Chelsea's midfield but I do expect them to give it a go, to try and not just resort to route one "hoooof", I can deal with being overly physical no problems, but not with the lack of attitude to at least try and play football the right way.

I don't understand this comparison? Chelsea didn't pass you to death, nor do they play anything like Barcelona? United played good football up until the final, where they could have played anything and the result would have been similar. Arsenal played football against Barcelona and were beaten quite easily over two legs.

Dont have any issues with any of the points you put across there in all honesty. How ever the top bit trust me Whelan and Whitehead are rubbish at passing no matter what you think. Im sure they can pick a pass in the championship when they have time but in the premier league they are beyond terible.

Honestly Whelan and whitehead is a championship midfield at best. The reason we have survived this far is becuase totaly by pass the midfiled :p

I'm sensing a pattern every time Young gets the ball, he cuts back to do an inswinger and the defender blocks it...he's far too predictable at the moment.

Christ, Smalling is almost as bad as O'Shea going forward, was that a shot?!?

Then you've had more then enough time to replace them, your manager has chosen not too.

I also, think again you're being harsh, I think both of them are more then capable of spreading the play in the middle of the park but Pulis tells his team to play round / over the midfield.

It's a poor tactic and aside from the physicality it's easy to counter. I imagine when more teams adjust to the physical style Stoke have they'll struggle more.
