Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [13th - 17th September 2014]

BBC are saying that he's gone with a back four, but I don't know if that's just conjecture. 5-3-2 would fit those players just as well. At least Rafael would make a proper wing-back.

EDIT: Yup - four at the back.

Hopefully we will start with a flat back 4. Falcao should come on later in the second half I would imagine.

Depends where blind plays, he could be central of the three cb's or midfield ( and yes I know what LvG said in the presentation but that means nothing so far lol)

Not sure why blackett is getting so many starts ahead of James ( unless Im reading the starters wrong and blackett isnt wing back and its Rojo)

Had a chuckle at " Queen Park Rogers", pirates coming to OT?

Straight 4-4-2 looks like - he must be taking the threat of QPR seriously to abandon the experimental 5-3-2 system.

Wouldn't say so:

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal on Sky Sports: "We will play with four at the back today, in midfield we play with four and Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney up front.

"I don't have five defenders fit so it was easier for me to decide the formation. Chris Smalling and Phil Jones are injured so I have to use the players I have available.

"Falcao has come from Colombia and has jetlag and he has to adapt to the culture and all the new players so I don't think it was right to start with him today."

Well at least that allows LVG to see if 4-4-2 can be more successful. So far having a back 3 hasn't really been working but that's understandable with players injured and it being a new system.

Also yes win is definitely needed, not like any of the teams have been tough opponents :p

Mata out wide then......

4-4-2 doesn't mean it's a flat 4-4-2. It could be a diamond as posted above. LvG won't stand there and say 'We play with 4 at the back, one in front, two in front of that, a number ten and then two strikers', he's going to just group it as defence / midfield / forwards.

Wouldn't say so:
That implies you need 5 defenders to play 5-3-2 - playing Young and Valencia in the back 5 for the first games of the season seems to indicate otherwise :p

Tough to tell whether the formation change is through pressure or whether Ashley Young being injured forced a change - losing an integral player like that is a good enough reason to shake things up.

We've seen Valencia used at RB before quite a few times before this system, and Young was also referred to as Wingback by LVG, clearly that's where he saw his position.

The formation change is due to the personnel available, look at our bench, it only has Shaw (not fit) and Valencia that could play at the back. It makes more sense to go this way.

Let's be honest, LVG is stubborn and arrogant as hell, he isn't going to care what the media is saying about his formation and change from the 'pressure'.

Diamond!

Hope the defence look more comfortable, the rest of the team is great. Falcao on the bench too. Want him on at HT! :D

Can someone please explain the Utd line up? Who is in what position

Also who is blackett? He keeps starting ahead of Jones, Smalling etc

Edit: okay so smalling and jones are injured.

Back 4 of Rojo, Evans, Blacket and Rafael

I imagine Blind is DM with Herrra, Di Maria and mata releatively free roaming behind the two strikers. Would not have seen that.

Jones and Smalling are injured at the moment and Blackett has been playing on the left as part of a three at the back because of injuries for most of the season.

The four at the back are pretty obvious.

Midfield 4 will likely be a diamond with Blind at the back, Mata at the front and Di Maria and Herrera on the left and right respectively.

Rooney and RvP up front.
