Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [13th March - 18th March 2015]

Massive win that. Swansea have been on a fantastic run recently and could've seriously hurt our chances of fourth. Dominated the first half and were unlucky not to be ahead but we completely controlled the second half and should've scored just as many as Swansea should first half.

Now **** gets real!

Not if Slippy starts I fear :(

Not sure I'd want to swap any of the midfielders out for that game. Against Swansea you've got to expect to face players that keep the ball so need to work harder to win back possession, the same can't be said about United so slowing down the midfield with Gerrard would only benefit them. We need to press them harder than a Corby 3300.

I'd be looking to bring on Gerrard after 60 minutes and play him further forward tbh. Let him go out with a bang in a position he can really contribute in.

Hard to believe we were 17 points off 2nd spot 12 games ago, been a massive turn around to get that down to 4 points and also means City are getting pulled in to the battle as well.

Swansea really worked us out first half to the extent that it was almost like they had an extra man. They were closing off all our options when we had the ball at the back and even when we managed to get forward we always looked a man short.

Huge credit to Rodgers for the change in the 2nd half because it completely changed the game. Where we looked a man short in the first half we looked to have the extra man in the 2nd. Huge slice of luck with the goal but we like scoring those goals vs Swansea.

It was 2 from 3 a few weeks back (with the greatest of respect to Spurs and Southampton) but it's now very much 3 from 4. The way City are playing you can't bank on them finishing in the top 4 right now.

edit: re Gerrard, it depends a bit on how teams line up against us. If we're going to be playing the 3-4-2-1 system regardless of who we're up against then right now there's no place for him but having him in the side ahead of Lallana gives us more flexibility for games like today when we need to tinker a bit. Although we were able to switch to a diamond in the 2nd half before the sub, it's far more natural and we looked far better once Gerrard was on with Allen and Henderson just ahead. We're a little too open when we had Lallana in one of the Allen/Henderson roles.

Something I don't understand is our defending from corners. We were absolutely abysmal but I'm struggling to understand how a simple formation change can make such a difference on set pieces.

I don't think the formation can or did make a difference to our defending at set-plays. I don't think we defended badly from set plays anyway.

Gerrard is great at defending corners, could've made the difference, in fact he did surprisingly well defensively. Allen moth by a distance?
