Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [14th - 17th December 2018]

Good end to a great week for us.

Thought we played well, if not amazing, for the majority of the game and other than the Alisson fumble I can't remember anything troubling him.

As for the rest of the players, Fabinho was outstanding yet again and was as good in defence as he was in attack. He's the type of player we've been crying out for since Mascherano left and he's making that position his own very quickly.

Today was the most impressed I've been of him. I know there's been a section of our fanbase that's been crying out for him to play every week but imo, even in the games where he'd played well he's not quite looked 100% up to the pace of the/our game and it always made me a little concerned that he could get targetted and run over in the biggest games. Today he was outstanding though both in terms of his defensive work and passing and is really starting to look like a top class addition to our midfield.

Shaq is going to get all the plaudits but Fabinho and Firmino were our two standout players for us today.

Firmino def upped his game today, Wini also did allot of grunt work that won't get much praise

Be interesting to see what game Wolves bring next week as they're likely to attack and press a lot more than Utd did today, getting a bit boring playing Man U with Jose's bus parking.

Has he ever brought a team to Anfield to actually play football, even with Chelsea he came to defend iirc?

As a neutral, Liverpool were all over Man U today. The club needs an entire overhaul - for me, I used to always seek out Man U on TV, guaranteed entertainment, I remember the 7-1? Mauling of Roma etc. Now, out of all the so called "big teams" I will always not bother with a Man U game on TV, as its usually dull

That result today wasn't at all unexpected, I was dreading the game and it turned out just as bad as I thought it would. If anything we were lucky not to lose by more. Woodward and Charlton looked extremely unimpressed in the crowd, I can only think/hope that they are going to sack Mourinho in the summer and are spending the intervening time lining up a replacement and putting a proper structure and plan in place to actually make some progress.

We've got Milner, or Moreno at a push, for LB. I'd rather keep Clyne as cover/competition for TAA and keep Gomez for CB rather than move him across.

Southampton looked very impressive from the highlights, Hughes let them down badly which wasn't a surprise given he's Championship quality at best.

You need to get Clyne trained up on the left to offer some cover, I forgot he existed until today, I used to think he was really good before his injury.
He's been out so long people have forgot about him. Prior to his injury he was our best and most consistent defender for 2 seasons. He's defensively sound and has the energy to get up and down the pitch but we've evolved into a side whose fullbacks are more midfielders than defenders and Clyne doesn't have the quality on the ball to play there regularly for us.

Had Milner been fit today then he's probably playing RB and is also playing LB if Robertson is out for any prolonged period. Providing he's happy to stay as a bit part player then Clyne's great to have in the squad but he's not playing regularly for us again.

It'll be interesting to see what happens when Gomez, Trent and Clyne are all fit - whether Gomez is still used as the 2nd choice RB or whether Clyne features more. I suspect there's a couple of things that work against Clyne though. Firstly I think Klopp sometimes prefers to bring in Lovren/Matip and move Gomez to RB in games where he wants a bit more height in the side and secondly Gomez's flexibility means it makes picking a 17 man squad much easier having him as your 2nd choice RB than Clyne. For example if you're starting with Gomez at RB and Lovren as your CB, you only need to put Trent on the bench to cover for an injury to both a CB and RB (if a CB gets injured then Gomez moves inside). If you play Clyne RB and Gomez CB then you need to pick both a CB and RB on the bench to cover both positions.
