Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [14th - 18th April 2017]

You're both incorrect. The rules have changed and that any one country can now have 5 teams qualify. The only way somebody would have missed out would have been if both Utd won the Europa and Leicester won the CL, in which case 4th place would have missed out as you can't have 6 teams.

Thanks for clarifying.

What would happen if United got top 4 and won the Europa League? Would the losing finalist of the Europa league get the spot or 5th place in the Premier league?
given what BaZ said above, I think Utd would automatically qualify for winning the EL, and 5th in the league would then get qualifying spot

I can't find anything to double check but I don't believe that is the case. As far as I know you only get the 5th entry if the team that wins the EL finishes outside the top 4. If Utd were to win the EL and finish 4th then there would be no 5th side from the PL.

strike two

fair enough - but that does seem to cause a problem with the number of qualifiers being an odd amount if Utd get 4th (as I mentioned yesterday) , unless Ive forgotten to allow for something elsewhere?

It's not quite so straight forward. The EL winner gets an automatic place in the group stage where as the team that finishes 4th has to play in the play-off round. If Utd came 4th and won the EL they'd go straight into the group stage so the number of guaranteed teams in the CL group stage would actually stay the same, there'd just be one less side in the play-offs. How they work the play-offs out with 1 less side I have no idea though.

That is basically exactly what I said yesterday BaZ :)

You didn't really say that, you asked the question. My initial post was correcting what you and grimm were saying regarding the possibility of Leicester winning the CL and Utd the EL - you both suggested that 3rd and 4th wouldn't qualify which wasn't true.

Is that correct though? If United got 4th and won Europa they would get straight into the champs league but that would leave a space empty in the qualifying round. I guess they give the oppertunity to one of the smaller league champions?

As I said, I have no idea what happens to that qualifiying spot but Utd would automatically qualify for the group stage in the event they won the EL and finished 4th, and there would be no 5th CL spot for the PL.

What I was thinking was even more confusing - lets say Utd get 4th and so therefore have to do a CL qualifier.....but then win the Europa, and therefore dont have to qualify. Surely this means there is a "spare" team somewhere in europe that doesnt have an opponant to fight for qualification - do they qualify automatically too....even if its unfair on everyone else who does have to go through that quali round or does in this instance mean 5th gets quali place?

(posted on the 19th at 1pm ish as shown above)

Yes and?

As I said, you didn't say what would happen, you asked the question. I assume that's why you used a question mark? And again, my post was correcting what you and grimm were saying regarding 3rd and 4th place not qualifying for the CL in the event that Leicester and Utd won the CL and EL. I didn't respond to your question about Utd finishing 4th and winning the EL (not sure why - I possibly didn't read your whole post) and only answered it after, when it was raised again.
