Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [16th - 22nd August 2011]

The only improvement was that the ball didn't end up in the back of the net. If Defoe puts his shot in the back of the net from the fumbled cross or reacted half a yard quicker when De Gea spilt the shot late on, would you have thought his performance was any better.

I'm not trying to knock the guy or write him off but he looked no better today than in the last 2 games imo. He made 2 pretty basic mistakes that more often than not, at least 1 would have ended up with a goal being conceded.

The first part you are basing off 'if this' and 'or that', we could do that with anything.

I've seen VDS and countless other keepers fumble that last shot many many times, he recovered and got to it - that's the important thing, is it not?

We'll agree to disagree but he was getting down to shots much better than his poor mistakes in the last two games which is what he was being highlighted on.

EDIT: Just to note as there's a ton of hostility and what not in this thread at the moment - I am totally cool headed and enjoying a discussion here with BaZ, not being 'over defensive' of my team :p

Yes I am, I'd hardly argue they were 2 pretty basic mistakes. His distribution was excellent tonight and he faced a lot of back passes with some pretty quick players closing him down and he responded very well.

Rotty posted a thread a few months ago asking people not to call others trolls for having an opinion yet it has fallen on deaf ears.

There's always the odd troll but some of the accusations have become ridiculous. It's got to a stage that if you say anything that Utd fans don't want to hear, you get called a troll.

I didn't come on here and just have a pop at him. I questioned people saying his performance was very good and he looked relatively solid. If a keeper dropping a cross inside his 6 yard box and fumbling a shot straight at him is very solid then I can't wait for him to have a bad game.

I think it's obvious to everybody other than a select few Utd fans that anybody claiming he had a good game are massively overcompensating.

Fantastic second half performance tonight, thought both Cleverley and Welbeck were a bit meh first half but the minute the latter scored his game went up several notches (brilliant cross from Cleverley as well)

Anderson will prove a lot of doubters wrong this season, his passing and goal scoring has improved massively.

De Gea was very good also, his distribution especially was exceptional he still had a few hairy moments but I think that's just down to his age, lack of playing time at United and maybe over confidence (which isn't a bad thing)

The usual suspects though wont see past their own bias but hey ho let them bitch and whine about so and so not getting sent of to help hand them a win

Orrrrrr, it's called a difference in opinion. Personally I thought his outstanding distribution under pressure more than made up for one missed cross and a spilled shot which he easily claimed.

Just going off R5L commentary

Smalling , Jones, Rooney & Young (in parts) were great from the start, and Anderson, Cleverley and Welbeck and Nani and Evans and Evra were fabulous once Spurs started to wane a little around the hour mark. VDG was shakey a few times and let off by Lennon's poor shot / pass early in the 2nd otherwise he had virtually nothing to do (and to be fair it sounds like -as usual - Friedal did some really decent saves as well)

No disrespect at all to Spurs at all, but they arent the level Utd need to be aiming at, and if Spurs had been fully fit I could see that game being much much closer if not a 0-0, which would have course be much worse for Utd than Spurs.

Ok with Welbeck, Cleverley and Anderson all being inexperienced to one degree or another I guess it was always going to be difficult (and apart from the opening few minutes the 1st half esp was pretty dire for the home side) but are Utd getting too predictable, as above Rooney was great throughout but we cant rely on him producing everything all the time - Nani wasnt invisible but he didnt seem to do anything that great before the 1st goal (60 minutes in), Anderson kept on losing the ball seemingly too easily and Cleverley was overpowered too easily when Spurs were at full strength

This is all from 5 Live, so it could well be coloured by that.

Fabulous to see Chicharito come on, ok he didnt score - but he looked very lively.

Spurs did very well for the most part for the first hour (apart from some REALLY long range shots ~40yrds +>?) but then fell apart a little and saved froma real hammering by their gk.

Very true - he is practically owed an assist for one goal tonight (not quite I know, but he made the goal possible)

Honestly, humble opinion or not, you are not going to find many people agreeing with you on that.

*sigh*

**** this place. The sheer amount of idiocy and blindness is getting too much for me. People need to open their eyes and see beyond their rosetinted glasses of their own teams players. It's not as if people are trolling either, they honestly believe some of the **** they come out with.

To be fair that isn't something limited to OCUK. Its something I've always encountered with football fans and is why I rarely get into discussions with people about the game any more. Just nod your head, tell them that they are absolutely right and sit back happy in the knowledge that we'll win another trophy with the very players that are so awful.

Frank do you ever actually watch any games? You need to get Sky mate or at least find a decent online stream ;)

That's fine, I never said anybody can't have a different opinion. I gave my opinion and you came out with a stupid exaggerated reply.

And I'd be fine if he hits a couple of good clearances next time we play you providing he also fumbles a shot straight at him and drops a relative straight forward cross :p

edit: and you responded to andy saying Utd fans are being defensive? :o
