I'll be honest I am finding it increasingly difficult to defend Rooney, he just seems so lackluster these days, Fergie said it himself at the end of last season when a game is too easy Rooney's performance level drops which is fair enough if you're playing Villa and winning 4-0 but there was no excuse for not being up for the game Monday night.

For right or wrong Rooney has never played well against Everton , or Liverpool for that matter.

Its just as ridiculous to discount him as a player (Im not suggesting you are doing this) because any player doesnt perform against one or two teams on a regular basis as it is to discount Utd for the title after losing the first (away) game

edit - I still think Welbeck shouldnt have started on Monday and it should have been Rooney and RvP starting (even if RvP only lasted 30 mins or whatever). Or even given the above, why Rooney was even on the pitch at all. But hey ho onwards and upweards

But then you can only blame 1 person.

The manager. I mean, he had AGES to plan for ther first game of the season. Yes we drew 4-4 with them last time out. Surely we know what everton are all about.

Deciding to play our 2 shortest CM's who can neither tackle nor challenge arially for the ball wasnt just a bad decision. it was catastrohpic.

I know we have iunjuries, but even sans injuries, what we we do, throw Carrick into CM where he still wouldnt out battle Fellani (as he demonstarted on Felani's goal).

Fergie really let the team and the fans down with his selection and ultimately the squad leading into this campaign.

That depends on the defensive midfielder you're talking about though, they aren't all good in the air.

I think Phil Jones could have helped stop him, he's a fairly big lad. Someone like Khedira would be ideal.

let's not get ahead of ourselves here. fellaini had a blinder. he won't have another one now until probably october, it doesn't matter though.

the inexcusable thing for united, was everton clearly wanted it more, couple this with united KNOWING city and chelsea had both won, this is when you need players like rooney to step up and he didn't. i don't see how the first game can be used as an excuse for not doing this as rooney played at an international and pre-season club tournament.

infact, i think i remember ferguson blaming a similar notion on rooney being sub par on his first england game after suspension. rooney's mind just seems to be elsewhere at times when the reality of his position is, he should be focused 100% of the time.

He's still good in the air and quite powerful, it's not purely about height. Either way he may not be much good in midfield so it's just guesswork.

i thought jones would eventually be turned into a midfielder?

and it's not all about height to be good in the air, just ask peter crouch!

We might aswell just send Hazard in to do fancy stuff in the box every game, give us a few penalties when the defenders can't handle it. :P
