Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [17th - 22nd August 2018]

Ultimately my view is this:

Mourinho has fallen out with half of the squad, including the key players. He's fallen out with Woodward and likely other senior club people. He is taking the club backwards at this point and has been since last season. The fact we finished second just shows how awful everyone else was.

I don't see a way to fix this beyond replacing him. Even if we have an OK season and finish second again, it's just so boring to watch and never gets better.

The fact he wasn't backed in the market means the writing is on the wall, might as well pull the trigger sooner rather than later. The players could play so much better under someone else, I have no doubt about that.

You finished 2nd and your complaining?

LOL

Well your never be at Man City’s standard, so 2nd place is as good as it gets.

Man City are where they are because they have spent a lot but also because they have run their club brilliantly for the past 5 or more years. If United and City’s spending was reversed but nothing else was we would be in the same situation. There is no excuse for whatUnited have let happen to the club since Fergie retired.

Nothing to suggest Poch would do any better really, he's not won anything. Not even a token cup.

He does pretty good with a limited amount of resource available, he'd bring back some entertainment you'd think, in the end even if you won the league you'd still all dislike Mourinho, which is understandable.

I agree.

There’s no doubt City are light years ahead of everyone now in the premiership and have raised the bar to a new level.

Reminds me of the early Wenger days.

Because he's at Tottenham. With pretty restrictive spending restraints. I'd be far more fearful of him at Manyoo/was happy when they appointed Mourinho... which says it all! :p

You don't think Poch would be doing better than Mourinho? Did Poch steal your wife?

It's not like they haven't spent, they also have one of the best strikers in the world. He's won nothing at all. Even United in our worst period of football have still picked up multiple trophies. He's fallen short any time they've got close to winning anything. He could quite easily end up being another Moyes if he ended up at a top club. Compare what he's achieved to what Klopp managed at Dortmund or even Ranieri at Leicester. Hell even Arsenal have won more than he has.

Who would you choose to replace Mourinho out of interest?

Honestly I have no idea. I don't know enough about world football to know who might be available and how they play. I saw a bit of Napoli last year and thought they played some exciting stuff but that is out of the window. Of the names we've been linked with I don't really want Simeone, he's another mostly defensive manager that won't fit us imo. Nobody in the Premier League really stands out to me other than the obvious Pep.

You don't think he'd be any better than Mourinho right now? I think he'd be playing better football, would have a more entertaining football philosophy, would be improving players, etc.

I think we might be playing better football, but I don't think we'd be more likely to win anything. I know he's the media darling but the inescapable fact is he has achieved absolutely nothing. Zilch. That's pretty poor and is hardly a sign that he can be a top manager.

I really think the Man Utd job is a poisoned chalice at the moment. The club is in decline and they really need the likes of Pep to turn things around. The thing is a coach of that stature would be made to take the Man Utd job.

It is going to be a long term project for whoever takes it on. I think the high level of expectation from Man Utd fans makes it even harder.

What hard expectations do we have. Play entertaining football. That’s literally it. Every manager we have had since Fergie has been disliked by the fans almost entirely for the football they played. Look at the criticism when we lose games and it’s that we are playing crap and being outplayed by rubbish teams.

Yes we would like trophies but the main thing we want is good football that we enjoy watching. All the other top teams in the league play good football. We are the odd one out.

Nothing apart from playing better football than you and overachieving in terms of cracking the top four with a fraction of the spending. No cups but that doesn't mean he hasn't achieved anything. Imagine if he'd had eight times as much to spend in that period...

So nothing then?

Even the year that all the big clubs had a bad season they still flopped and Leicester won the title. They are perennial losers, they've not won anything. If you want to praise that then sure, go ahead. You're acting like he's managing a bunch of nobodies. His squad is full of international stars, he should have won something by now.

You asked what he's achieved and I gave two major things. What he's done with a fraction of the budget leads me to think he'd be outperforming universally derided Mourinho right now... but obviously we disagree.

You know who else got praised for that? Moyes.
