Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [17th - 22nd August 2018]

Truly abysmal performance and result for United, to concede 3 to Brighton is bad enough but the overall performance was more like relegation fodder than a team with eyes on a top 4 finish.

He did more then the rest of your midfield but ai.

He really didn't. Diving for a penalty doesn't count as a contribution in my books. Woodward looks furious. Like comically so

This is really what was bound to happen, Mourinho complaining the centre backs aren't good enough (despite playing two that he signed himself for £30m a piece), they look poor and we lose against a theoretically much weaker team.

Could be downhill from here.

I keep saying it, he can't improve players, in fact i think his training and management style makes most players worse. He's Harry Redknapp with a bigger budget. When the offence doesn't work he buys a new one, new creative playmaker, new striker, then they get stale after two years and he tries to replace them. He buys defenders, they get worse under his training and he wants to buy new again. He's a bad manager.

His entire shtick is trying to do no rotation, playing the same team for the form bonus and begging players to play harder, play through pain, etc. It wouldn't surprise me if part of his "play the same squad for form bonus" tactic includes really soft training to help not tire the players out and that could be at least part of why players get worse over time under him.

Bailly was 10 times the player when he joined as he is right now. Martial is regressing under him, most of them are.

How isnt it a contribution? I swear some united fans have an agenda against Feillani. He's done more today since he came on then Fred for eg.

Honestly at this point I think the board really have to think about Mourinho's position. Based on today's performance things can't get much worse, and there could be a massive upside to appointing a new manager. Unfortunately I don't think United will sack him prior to Christmas at least.

There's no way the board will sack jose this soon after transfer window or start of season, would be a huge embarrassment for them.

It’s not a contribution because most of the time you don’t get penalties for diving like that. When you are looking to buy players you don’t think “I want a player that wins the occasional penalty by cheating”. He was poor and his only “contribution” was to dive for a penalty.

The whole team was gash today. United fans just dislike fellaini because he is a good representation of the clubs issues over the past 5 years. Average player that shouldn’t be anything but a bit part player who gets played over other players who should be getting the minutes and is overpaid for his quality. He represents the manager giving up on any sort of “pretty” football in favour of basic long balls into a target man.

I think it's because, at times, these kind of contributions are highlights in mediocre-terrible performances.

Ultimately my view is this:

Mourinho has fallen out with half of the squad, including the key players. He's fallen out with Woodward and likely other senior club people. He is taking the club backwards at this point and has been since last season. The fact we finished second just shows how awful everyone else was.

I don't see a way to fix this beyond replacing him. Even if we have an OK season and finish second again, it's just so boring to watch and never gets better.

The fact he wasn't backed in the market means the writing is on the wall, might as well pull the trigger sooner rather than later. The players could play so much better under someone else, I have no doubt about that.
