Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [19th - 24th September 2015]

Oh, a goal! Mata was offside though!

Good finish by Martial, a goal out of nothing let's hope we don't sit back on it now.

joke. liverpool and utd now having goals given that were offside

spurs had one denied today by the same linesman who didn't call the liverpool one

Martial with a goal, Rooney still looking like a pub team player. His first thought with the ball is look for a backwards or sideways pass, his forward passing (what few of them there are) has been pretty dire. So much sideways and backwards passing in general from the team because the movement upfront is crap which happens when Rooney plays and he's not able to pass or making the right runs anymore.

Young for Rooney and try Depay in no.9 or 10 position. Depay still doesn't look like a wide player, Utd need to see if he can work through the middle and if maybe he can form a partnership with Martial.

I can't see how with the massive improvement since Rooney got injured why you'd put him straight back in. Still think there are financial reasons higher ups are asking/forcing LVG to start him.

Rooney and Carrick need to be dropped, why they are playing with Hererra and Scweinsteiger on the bench is beyond a joke. Mata also does nothing.

Liverpool's one couldn't have been more obvious though, Coutinho was miles off side(presuming you're talking about that offside goal) the entire time. Here Mata was running into an onside position and linesmen have to look at the pass being made as well, they aren't only looking down the line so if the pass goes and he flicks over to Mata he'd look onside. Still a call he probably should have gotten, but not comparable to Coutinho standing what 7-8 yards offside and going for the ball.

Did Bastian play the whole game midweek, can't remember if he did, I'm sure he played the full 90 either midweek or last weekend so I can understand him not starting today. This team screams compromised to fit Rooney in but sensible enough to keep a goal threat on. IE if Rooney was in form you'd put him on for Martial, not a central mid. Here they've dropped a central mid to fit Rooney in which is hurting them.

Also Depay not being good enough and poor defensively is massively hurting the team without a frankly phenomenal Shaw in the side. I think that is why you need Young starting every game on the left with Blind or Rojo behind, way stronger defensively and more direct which is what Shaw provided more than Depay.

I think Rooney is past his strike role, he should drop back to midfield and learn from Schweinsteiger to be a forward playmaker.

We need faster more alert strikers to peirce through defence. Why we let Hernandez go I still question.

lol, Rooney can't pass, he's a rubbish passer. He can't learn to be like Bastian because he isn't 1/10th of the player he is in midfield terms. He's poor defensively, horrible passer and poor vision. Rooney at his best was pure power, running with the ball and ultra powerful shots from 20-30 yards. bastian is all precision and placement, they are polar opposites. Rooney is completely unable to drop back and play a role similar to Bastian.

Rooney is past his role as a player at a top club, he will never be anything other than a forward and he's no where near good enough for a top 4 team currently. The exact way he's played this season I wouldn't start him at a single premier league club, probably not championship either. Last seasons form he'd do okay at a mid/lower table prem club but I doubt he would.

Rooney will likely be off to the MLS, Dubai, Qatar, somewhere like that with his next contract. Why get 100k a week to be the star(yet still rubbish) striker for lets say, West brom, when you can get 200k a week to live in LA and play against worse opposition and thus look better?

Rooney hasn't done a thing all season, there is no reason why he should be starting.

There are lots of reasons, thousands of them, in fact not just 300k of them but millions. He's being paid 300k a week and being on the bench would make the business men look retarded, commercially he's worth even more. He's still England's biggest(manufactured) star and worth a lot more when he's playing.

It's a shame that it's true, he's worth a lot of money to the club through other means than just on field performances.

some decent play by us but i stress SOME, Moreno looking most dangerous, Milner and Sturridge should both of scored for me, Sturridge i get he will be rusty i guess

Wasn't van Dijk meant to be the greatest CB prospect ever? Sold himself way too cheaply for the goal. Awful.

Probably not ever, given that would have meant more interest from the money clubs but he's meant to be a decent enough replacement for Alderweireld.
