Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [1st - 3rd January 2019]

Shelveys "tackle" was disgusting last night, exactly the type of thing the FA need to be stamping out.

What are the rules on those tackles that go unpunished. I assume because it was "seen" and given as a foul there is nothing they can do retrospectively.

Technically speaking they scrapped that and retrospective action could be taken but in the 3-4 years since, I can't recall a single time where they did.

It's going to be interesting to see how both sides set up tonight. I can't imagine City will set-up as offensively as they did in the 2nd leg of the CL tie but equally they can't be as pragmatic as they were at Anfield. Who they select at LB might give us a clue as to how they're going to approach the game - will they go with Laporte, concerned about our attack or will they stick with Zinchenko who will offer them more going forward? Most of side picks itself, the only question mark being over who's the 3rd midfielder alongside Henderson and Wijnaldum. I suspect it'll be Milner in a regular 4-3-3 but I just wonder if we'll go similar to how we set-up vs Utd with Keita playing tucked in on the left and switching Mane to the right to target their LB area.

Pretty much exactly a month ago it looked like we were going to fall 4 points behind City with a draw in the Derby and now we've got a chance to move 10 points clear of them with a win today. Regardless of the outcome today our fans and the squad need to put things into perspective - a month ago every Liverpool supporter and I suspect player would have snapped your hand off if you offered them the chance to be level on points with City after tonights game so to be a minimum of 4 clear is a great position to be in.

I was wondering, would VAR have made any difference to the Shelvey tackle last night? I can't remember whether the ref has to request VAR or the VAR centre tell the ref he should look at the incident. If it's the latter then it might stop smaller teams from putting in the 'reducer' tackles to try to unsettle bigger teams.

Think City will win this one but hopefully its a good game regardless. These sort of hyped up games tend to be a bit **** unfortunately.

City's side doesn't look that offensive - their picks at fullback are that of a side not wanting to get exposed.
Henderson, Wijnaldum and Milner midfeld, rest as expected
Pretty much as expected then. Long-term I suspect Fabinho may feature more often but I get the feeling Klopp doesn't 100% trust him in these sorts of games just yet. Wijnaldum was a certainty as was Milner providing he was fit.
Think it's a mistake us putting hendo back in over fabinho :(
Why? Fabinho's better on the ball but he's also more likely to get overrun in midfield or play a careless sideways pass when he's rushed in midfield, as he did vs Wolves and Arsenal recently. You're not going to get away with that sort of thing vs City and its not a surprise that Klopp's gone for the safer bet with Henderson.

Can anyone remember when Henderson played a howler of a pass? Fabinho has been excellent recently however he's also played a few waywards passes backwards. Hendo is absolutely the right call for me.

I get klopp logic behind that midfield but it's too samey, Henderson doesn't offer us anything going forward, goes backwards and sideways far too often for me.

I know fabinho made a couple mistakes but Henderson has done it aswell when played.

The one thing this midfield will do is run all night which vs City is good as we will need to chase them down

Surprised it took this long for Pep to get fed up of Walker. Strange line up for City, 3 CBs and a fullback.
only decent defender in the bunch is laporte. the rest are targets. kind of let down that we dont have a more attacking line up to attack it but maybe the front 3 is enough and we can be solid in midfield.

Doesn’t take much for either of these teams to get smashed due to the attacking talent.

Hopefully we can minimise mistakes and get at least a draw
