Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [2 - 4th March 2013]

He has got part of a point, Giggs has been great lately, but for last season and the first half of this season he was very poor. I'd personally rather he ended on a high and took up a coaching role at the club.

Rosicky doesn't have zero quality.

Ok, I should have said, offer nothing to the team and/or have zero quality. Rosicky is rarely if ever fit, and no where near the player he was we signed. Again the point is overpaid for what they offer, Rosicky on 20k a week(if that) based off how much he plays might be worthwhile, the 60k or so a week he's on, its awful value based off years of injuries. Diaby has played more than Rosicky recently, but is a much worse player, Gervinho is just rubbish, etc, etc. Gibbs is injury prone and can't defend in the slightest, yet gets a new contract....

These are all players who basically take more out of the club than they put in. Podolski is supposedly on between 80-100k a week, yet compared to 60k a week Rosicky or Diaby, offers several times the value. Podolski can play 50 games a year and is a high quality player, the other two will be lucky to make 10 useful appearances a season and most of them in a non match fit, no form state, yet they get paid not far off what Podolski gets.

There are a few hundred players equal in Rosicky in quality, who could be had for 60k a week, who could actually play a full season, and we don't have any of them because we pay Rosicky 60k a week instead.... financial burden.

He played 38 games last season...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomáš_Rosický

He's a very neat and tidy player Rosicky is, very tidy. It's unfortunate that he wasn't blessed with Ronaldo/Rooney genes, that's the pay off i guess. Of course though, there's hundreds of players that are built like Rooney and have the suave of Rosicky...you talk madness DM.

Edit..who are these hundreds of players as well? Who are thinking of exactly?

Bloody Wigan... is what I'll be saying at 7:15pm this evening. Haven't won away there for 6 seasons and we're due another slip up after a few very good performances :(

I think DM's got a point actually. Arsenal have the fourth highest wage bill in the prem at ~£144 million, far higher than Tottenham's at less than £100 million, but currently Spurs are above them. Those players DM listed are clearly on higher wages than they deserve, seeing as they offer very little to your squad. I'd be unhappy as a United fan if most of those players were in our squad.

With regards to today's game against Norwich, I really hope Fergie rests the important players. I'd rather we drop a few points than have someone important get injured ahead of the Madrid game, particularly seeing as Norwich are a physical side.

You could go through every club though and find players that maybe shouldn't be on the wage they are on, it's not just limited to Arsenal. I've no idea how you can compare them to Spurs, Arsenal have been in the CL for the last 16 years, their wage structure is obviously going to be bigger than say Wigan/Spurs/Newcastle.

If you consider there wage structure is the 4th highest and they finished in the top 4 for ages, that seems pretty on the ball. They are hardly going to have the lowest wage bill and be top of the prem.

True, but Arsenal's wages aren't that far off United, and considering the gap between the two teams (no offence intended) that's pretty shocking. It just seems to me that Arsenal have a lot of deadwood in the squad at the moment, players who are either frequently injured or just don't have the input that Arsenal need.

Wenger has put together some fantastic Arsenal teams in the past but this isn't one of them. He certainly improved it a bit with his summer signings, but the squad needs further investment (particularly in defence) if you're going to challenge for trophies again.

I dont remember Giggs being particularly poor last season

I remember him struggling away to City but didn't Fergie that day also play Scholes and Park in midfield? He was very poor for the first half of the season though.

But he hasn't got the money that Chelsea/Man U/City have got, are people forgetting they have been selling their best players and having to replace them. Unlike the other clubs who have just added, added and added. It's not a level playing field!

How are Diaby, Rosicky, Gervinho, Denilson, Gibbs, Djourou, Squillaci, Chamakh not a financial burden on the club exactly? They offer nothing to the team, zero quality and are all overpaid by huge amounts relative to their ability levels as footballers.

Please point out where these players aren't a burden on the club, don't restrict our finances and I'm being bitter, you answer will be interesting to say the least.

Unless you've decided to misread/misunderstand what I said. I didn't mention debt, I didn't mention financial ruin, I said, financial burden, nothing more or less.

If you're spending 14mil on Gervinho and a further 12mil over 4 years on wages(at least that much, maybe more) how is that 26million on a completely inept footballer describable as anything but a financial burden? We have a 143mil wage bill(last year, it will almost certainly be up this year, I would guesstimate around the 155mil mark). If we've spent 26mil(or intend to) on Gervinho, we can't spend 26mil on anything else, its 26mil less we have to invest in other players.

Sometimes your bitterness towards me really does make you say some very very silly things.

I hold no bitterness towards you, I pity your negativity and amount of energy you put into your hatred towards someone you know very little about other than a few seconds on the tv or what you read in the papers. But bitterness towards you, no....

So you think a bunch of players that you don't rate offer nothing to the club? Still only your opinion but thats not important.

Please do explain what makes Arsene so unique from all the other managers in Football? Not everyone has your special ability of hindsight ;)

Is it a waste of money, yes, could he have got better players with the money, of course he could. But at the time he used his judgement to make an investment in a player. And like life not all investments work out for the best.

But because you are not in that position of responsibility it is so much easier to make judgements on failures or just focus on the negative aspects of the team.

If that is your opinion of financial burden then there isnt one manager alive that has not left their club without a financial burden.

This, people seem to just have it in for Wenger..its proper mad. He does very well considering he's had to let go several world class players that other manager havent done, he wasnt allowed to offer Viera/Pires new deals back in the day due to the structure of the club (not his fault).. He's bought Cazorla/Giroud/Monreal this season for 35 mil, absolute quality for the money.
