Lack of europa league is a bonus this year. Only having to focus on the league this year is leaving the players fresh without those pointless midweek european travels
Very much so, did you go out of the CC cup early?
Seriously people forget how much difference the lack of games, lack of injuries, more time training and more time for the manager to watch game tape and adapt tactics to the next game with 7-8 games less.
Look at Newcastle, first year, no europe, not much in other cups, 5th in the league awesome year. Next year, europe, injuries, tiredness, relegation scrap. This year, no europe, completely different season again. Newcastle fans were shocked by this, I said it before last season started, it happens to most teams. Only Liverpool upwards and 100mil + squads can just about cope with that kind of extra number of games. Spurs only dropped a place but had about a 10% lower win rate in the league the year they were in the champs league and did significantly better in the Europa years when Redknapp basically ignored the competition sending out kids more often than not.
I think for smaller squads it can easily cost 12+ points, for bigger squads, it's probably going to cost them a couple of wins at least in the league.
It's the kind of situation where frankly if you are top of the league when the first FA cup game comes around, you should put out a youth team and nothing else, just checked, Oldham 5th jan. If you're top into 2014, I'd screw off that game completely with youth players and anyone who needs game time/coming back from injury maybe(gerrard back by then?) if you get through and depending on where you are for the next round again, do the same.
