Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [20th - 23rd December 2019]

No one else hear the 2 tannoy announcements telling fans to stop racist abuse ? In Italy don't they now have to stop the game after 2 announcements ?

Be interested to see the media reaction or whether it gets swept under the carpet somewhat. Have the commentators mentioned it ? Im watching a stream with no comms so maybe tv viewers are oblivious to this ?

You make it sound like AFTV is a charity and not a commercial operation, Robbie works full time for AFTV. It's literally their job to go to games and create clicks, they're not doing it out of the goodness of their hearts.

I've never liked social media group/forums run by people with large egos. It happened over the years with QPR and then rival groups of fans from different places fighting amoungst each other both online and at the games.

Meh, it's the digital age. People get ludicrous amounts of money as a result of people watching them play video games from start to finish, unboxing products, their fitspo lives etc. I think it's a bit naff but leave it to the market to decide. Even if someone hates AFTV and thinks they're leeching off the club , there's no excuse for physical intimidation as a means of trying to stop them doing what they do; if the club start doing well consistently we'll see how much of the viewer-base sticks around. If people think they can create a better platform and take their viewers away, then... go do it - it's always easier to criticise what others are doing than it is to do something yourself.

I don't believe for one minute that Robbie wants to see Arsenal do well anymore. I'm sure he's an Arsenal supporter and he started out with good intentions but AFTV has turned into a big business purely off the back of Arsenal doing poorly and the lunatic behaviour of a section of Arsenal's fan base. It's not by accident that the same 3 or 4 people get interviewed every week. He knows that people tune in to see DT or Claude losing their **** and screaming Wenger/Kroenke/Emery out. A video from one of these guys will get 500k+ views as opposed to sub 100k views from an other fan.

I've followed this spat between AFTV and Talksport and Robbie's arguement of just wanting to give fans a voice is nonsense. If that was the case then he'd focus on interviewing more sensible fans that would give a balanced view on the situation at the club rather than interviewing some lunatic, that was talking about killing himself on twitter the other year, screaming "it's time to go". But as above, the sensible supporter will get 50k views where as the lunatic will get 700k.

If Arsenal started to do well then his views would drop significantly and he'd generate far less money. He doesn't want that.

I'm just playing devil's advocate btw. He can't do anything about how the team perform, so it's not like if they started doing well he'd be able to drag them down again to keep generating more revenue and he's not daft enough to base his channel around angry fans (which I'll get back to). You could easily argue many of the other fan outlets have profited from the clubs demise (Arseblog to name one) as they've shot to fame in the same time period, just via different mediums, but they get far less heat for whatever reason. People are drawn to drama, but I don't really see opinions on there that are any different to what's said in the weekly threads here by the regulars though and the peak AFTV rants are from a couple of years ago now - these days everyone tends to be a bit more level-headed. Obviously certain characters try to milk it to try and be internet-famous, but ultimately nobody is forcing anyone to watch them and if people are weak-minded enough to parrot whatever their opinions are rather than forming ones of their own...

Anyway, Robbie has done a good job diversifying AFTV from the post-game fan cam to give the channel legs. I don't subscribe but do watch the odd video; I don't want to listen to Troopz or DT, so don't watch their vids, but there's plenty of other stuff that's decent like Graham’s tactical analysis show, some of the round tables, they had Jay Bothroyd on a show the other day and it was pretty interesting listening to him, the preseason stuff where he travels abroad to follow the team, etc.

Ultimately if the way the club wasn't being run was such a joke, then people would care far less about all this stuff.

Just a pretty mediocre club in general, no history, crap fans and they’ll be back to waddling around outside the top 4 soon enough.

Inb4 but muh champs league final last season.

No history you do know there was football before the premier league? Crap fans again what makes you say that ?

Performances of late are mediocre I’ll give you that!

I appreciate there's a lot that's out of his control however I dispute that he wants the best for Arsenal, not anymore anyway. You say he's not daft enough to base his channel around angry fans but that's exactly what the channel has been built upon and continues to be based around. I've just skimmed through the top 100 viewed videos on their channel and only 2 (1 around 40th on the list and 1 around 90th) are following wins, both videos after beating Spurs. Yes, he's branched out and doing other things but still the vast majority of views on his channel are from videos from 3 or 4 of the same fans that are known for being hysterical.

All media, particularly fan media need stories to survive, whether that be a team struggling or doing well - it's difficult to create content that people will watch/listen to when nothing is happening. The difference between AFTV and other fan media that I've seen is that they're actively targetting the most hysterical fans. AFTV is no longer about giving a voice to fans, it's a comedy channel with a bit of fan opinion on the side.

From a pure business pov it's difficult to argue with what Robbie has done but it's clearly not sustainable at these levels without those few lunatics and or if Arsenal's performances picked up which is why I don't believe for one moment that he wants Arsenal to do well anymore.

So it seems the premier league didn't want headlines about a game being abandoned so they ignored protocol after the third announcement when players should have been taken off.

I’m not sure that’s exactly how it works. I believe there needs to be a second and third act of racism, with further warnings given.

This announcement was just being repeated because of the first and only instance.

Edit: Nevermind, it looks like there were further incidents :( shocking

Surely it's not protocol to make a repeated announcement either?

There was also more than the single incident during the game.

I just edited before you posted, the commentators during the game were speaking as if it was the one instance with the warning repeated. I didn’t listen to the punditry after the game where it was confirmed it wasn’t an isolated instance.
