Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [21st - 24th August 2015]

By the letter of the law was Lukaku offside there? He's not played or attempted to play Barkley's pass until after it took a deflection off Mangala. He only becomes active after the deflection which he can't be offside from.

You can see why LvG didn't want Pedro, he's far too fast and creative for our ponderous team.

I'm not so concerned, personally... it felt like a lot of money for someone who is in their later years.

Obviously he's a good player, but I would rather give Januzaj a decent shot at the first team.

Later years? It's not like he's 34 and at the end of his career, he just turned 28 last month. The team needs someone now, not someone who probably won't come good for another couple of years and pedro still has plenty left in the tank.

I'd also put money on another forward signing before the end of the window who will start games ahead of Januzaj. All the talk by LvG about not needing anyone more up front and the recent daft rumours about the likes of Neymar are probably nothing more than tactics to stop teams driving up the price of their real targets. Every fan, pundit, commentator, newspaper etc can that it's needed and it would be naive to think that LvG and Man U don't also see it.

If United don't sign another striker before end of transfer window then they are in serious trouble, I can't see anyone getting the goals they need to compete. Chelsea also need to step up, won't come close to any titles this season if we keep playing like we did yesterday

Yes. Lukaku was offside when the ball was played which eventually fell to him - the ball could have taken multiple deflections and the line-o should still flag for offside. I believe these type of incidents fall under the "Gaining an advantage" section in the Offside Law.

What I don't understand about LvG is that he favours players with pace and creativity, yet he turns down the opportunity to sign Pedro and is playing Mata on the wing. Mata is a good player but he's absolutely not got the pace to play on either flank, he's an attacking midfielder all day long. I'd rather he played Memphis and Young either side and found somewhere else to play Mata.

I guess I just take a longer-term approach to it. I know he's only 28, but as soon as players get north of 30 it can be a bit unpredictable.

It's not so much that I think it's a bad idea to sign someone like Pedro, that it doesn't bother me too much. It's not as if we've missed out on the opportunity of a lifetime, like with Rooney/Ronaldo/Neymar/Bale etc.

Sat firmly on the fence tonight; score draw between Arsenal and Liverpool.

Still getting over the wonder goal against Leeds :D.

Bugger our backline looks a little weak tonight.

Could be interesting. Don't think Chambers and Gabriel have started a game together before.
