Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [21st - 24th Jan 2012]

l
He may look better at Coventry, he was awful at Boro.
Hardly got a chance though from what i have read?

Bunn got a goal for Preston last week i have just seen :p

Seems all of the lads we have on loan are impressing, Guidetti being the standout with 11 goals in 12!

EDIT: Just seen another ex City player score in David Ball.

Come to think of it there are a staggering amount of players that have left our academy quite recently that are playing at a high standard.

Given that you didn't pay enough attention to notice what formation we were playing and position Gerrard was playing, I'm not overly worried about your opinion on Gerrard's performance today.

Regarding Carroll, I'm pretty sure we've had this conversation before. We need to bring in another forward (we did at the start of the season) to compete with Carroll and like any other club, whoever is in form should play.

As for if/when we should sell him. Unless we receive a ~£20m offer, I wouldn't sell him for at least another season after this. As it is, we'll be lucky to get more than £10m now and that won't drop much but could rise a lot.

Did Gerrard play well today then?

I really find it hard to believe you'd only get 10m for Carroll now, like I said a package upwards of 15m is much more likely especially given he'll still have admirers from his Newcastle days. Leave him another year and a half then yeah then you'd be lucky to get 10m for him as the type of club that would still be interested in taking him will have dropped. As for his future given his present position I cant see bringing in another striker being good for him whatsoever.

No, Gerrard didn't play well today. He's played well as a CM plenty of times since Dalglish has returned though (twice against you) and like I said to Pigeon regarding Adam's loss of form since Lucas's injury, it's slightly unfair to judge him when he's playing without a defensively minded CM alongside him.

You might find it hard to believe but I'm struggling to see who will pay much more than £10m. As I've said, how many clubs are capable of paying that much and of those, who is likely to be in for him. At the very most I can think of 1 - Spurs and who's to say Redknapp will still be Spurs manager at the end of the season?

edit: and I only care about Liverpool's future, not Carroll's. Bringing in another striker is what Liverpool needs.

Considering it's all hypothetical then assuming Redknapp is still at Spurs then they'd certainly pay between 15-20m for him as I doubt they'll be keeping Adebayor. Stoke actually spent 12m on Crouch and with speculation about Jones' future it's highly plausible that they could be interested at around 15m as well and who knows maybe even Newcastle although I admit the acrimonious departure most specifically Ashley's involvement could rule that out but who knows with Newcastle.

Yes, it's all hypothetical but I can't see there being a big pool of clubs willing and able to pay a decent fee for him and personally, I wouldn't sell him unless we received ~£20m or a deal that could pay us significantly more than that if he fulfills his potential.

20m is probably a little greedy but then that's what happens when you pay 35m for a player who's not worth 35m, I'm sure Chelsea would sell Torres tomorrow if someone offered them 50m but that aint about to happen either :p

Ref was a joke at Loftus Road

Still crap, going down, team is awful, I said back in August its a bunch of mercenaries that will just move on if Wigan go down.

19 goals ALL SEASON, amazing return for the wage these guys are on.

Sooner Wigan go down the quicker Wigan can rebuild. Simple fact, aint going for Europe any more when old Brucie was in charge ha, Martinez can build a good team ala Swansea, tbh Whelan knows he wigan can afford to go down or he would have spent or got rid of Martinez.

Its not like Wigan have superstars on the wage bill.

THe real problem is wages, if he's only considered a 10mil player, and certainly not a 20mil striker on current form, NO ONE will pay his wages. He's likely making 1-2million a year more than just about anyone would even consider paying, but over a 4-5 year contract you're talking about circa 10mil in wages that need to be "covered".

The thing is, he could likely do better at a different club. We've seen Adam's in this league playing better than he is, same goes for almost everyone in the team. Carroll back at his Newcastle form, maybe, could be a pretty good striker.

TO say he's crap with the ball at his feet and can't go around players is daft, he scored several goals at newcastle with his feet, he's got a pretty damn powerful shot as it goes and he's no where near as slow as people are saying.

We can guess a lot without seeing training and what the manager tells them, for all we know Dalglish doesn't want them to keep putting the ball in the box high for him and they train constantly passing him the ball deep to hold it up and play others in. Maybe the fitness training under Dalglish is underplayed as the last time he was the manager the fitness levels in the league were a world apart from now.

The craziest thing is the idea they should have bought downing to cross in for Carroll. Villa without downing, Carew scoring loads, Gabby playing great, with Downing, cut in and shoot, cut in and shoot, cut in and shoot and their big strikers all went to crap.

Either way, asking 10mil is a lot, and there isn't a chance in hell that Spurs would take him, with or without Redknapp, their attack is about pace and passing, not banging it long, they could have kept Crouch if they wanted to play that way, they didn't and Crouch is in a lot more form than Carroll right now.

I can't see them getting Adebayor, but why buy Carroll, tempt him off a huge wage, when you can get a better more in form striker on the cheap.

Honestly, Ba would be easier to get, starting from a lower wage and potentially has a relatively low buy out clause, that's ignoring what are lots of other choices out there.

I heard Ba's knee was a potential career ender if he injures it and one EPL club backed out because of it though? I think I heard the phrase 'potential time bomb'!

Flog Charlie Adam back to Blackpool for £2.5 million, get Snjeider. sorted!

Newcastle just looked jaded yesterday. Krul didn't have the greatest of games neither did either cb.

As I said yesterday we shouldn't have folded as we did, that was poor, but shocking pen decision got them in the match when they were quite honestly playing ****.

Oh well, Liverpool lost as well so not a tragedy.

Sorry Baz its very fair to judge him when Lucas isnt there, He has to step up and when Lucas was there he wasnt amazing then either did some great passes but not enough to make me think he will make it etc.

He supposedly has these great free kicks/corners etc yes he did them very well at Blackpool most of them for us have been VERY poor.

I missed our game yesterday due to family being over but if Gerrard was placed in the middle next to Adam that was done before and it didnt work, Henderson if on the right also isnt very good.

Carroll imo doesnt suit us what so ever so i feel sorry for him in a way, Our signings imo excluding Enrique/Henderson are not good enough, Also Baz do you really think all we need is a striker? Id say we need that too but also two Wingers

KD is saying the same excuses game after game though to his credit he didnt give them any credit or praise from the Bolton game (Watched his interview this morning)

Or how about playing him because we need to play him as we have no strikers?

Unless we get a big offer (which we won't) then selling or loaning Carroll now is nothing short of stupidity.

As I said, we need to start playing better to help him and we need to take some of the burden off him. There's no sense in selling him now though.

I have seen nothing that convinces me he has anything positive to bring to Liverpool. That pains me, because i am not a knee-jerk fan, and this is not just down to today alone. I feel sorry for Carrol, it is like we are waiting for him to adapt to us, and he doesn't have it in him, which make him look very, very ordinary. It was a bad buy regardless of price-tag. I don't even see a place for him as an impact-sub,- he has no impact.

Despite the worst collapse in a half I think I've ever seen from Newcastle yesterday, the fact that Stoke and Liverpool lost, and Chelsea could only manage a draw, has left us no worse off than we were before the game yesterday (apart from a smaller goal difference).

If Man Utd can beat Arsenal this afternoon then we can write off this whole weekend and move on as if nothing had happened.

There aren't many times when I want Man Utd to win but today will be one of them. :)

I think it might of been Stoke.

Newcastle just looked jaded yesterday. Krul didn't have the greatest of games neither did either cb.

Every time Mike Williamson plays we do crap. Scoring just before half time was probably a bad thing in hindsight, it totally changed Fulham's team talk. If we went in 0-0 at half time, pretty sure 2nd half the game would have been won by us.

Fairplay to Fulham though for not sitting back, but as said ref was really crap yesterday.

And Everton as well. I think the Stoke team actually spoke to us about him as well and how bad his knees were.

seems Frimpong is in high spirits!

Taken from his Twitter:

You lot should stop caring about me I hope petrov foot is on after hitting A metal face:)

As for Wolves, we were terrible in the 2nd half. Really need to strengthen in defence, and never play Karl Henry again! I'm sure I've defended him in the past, but he is an idiot!

Duff cheating for the penalty as well

Saying it was in the box, the ball didn't even go in the box never mind the player and the foul  :D
