Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [22nd - 26th April 2016]

It's a young side, Kane and Alli at the least have years and years ahead of them to improve. I did a comparison between Arsenal and Spurs a few weeks ago when someone said the Arsenal side was young and hungry. The only player over 30 is Vorm and even then keepers can play till they are 35+ way more easily than outfield players. Vert is the oldest outfield players at 29 but then Wimmer stood in for him very ably. Alder is 27 so probably has 5 years at least ahead of him.

Dembele is the oldest midfielder at 28 and while important he has a while ahead of him and it's one guy to replace. The majority of the midfield and offence is very young and basically has a decade left to play together, not that I think all will stay but. his exact team could play together for 5 years and get better each season and then only need one player replaced per season to keep it going for another 5 years.

The improvement under Poch already is massive but as this team plays together more, as the youngest players continue improving and gaining experience they are set up to be able to be a great team for multiple years.
Their spine is both good enough and able to play for the next 5 years most likely with minimal changes.

In comparison Arsenal need to replace most of the spine of the team within the next few years. Personally with the head injury affecting his career quite significantly I can't see Cech hanging on till 40, can see 1-2 years left at most for him. Mert/Kos/Monreal are old, forget if they are all over 30 or very close and for me Monreal and Mert aren't close to good enough anyway. Caz is 31 I think and just had a bad knee injury, doubt he'll be around for long. Then Giroud and Ramsey need replacing on a simply no where near good enough basis. Spurs have a really solid foundation where Arsenal need huge changes over the next few years.

Even when we are talking about spurs and Leicester you still manage to **** off Arsenal

When does the Leicester's and Tottenham's summer sale starts? :)
Well done to both, especially Leicester but surely there will be bigger clubs from all around the Europe after their best players.

Leicester maybe, would be nice if they agree to stick together for another year but even with the poor form of chelski and utd, it might be too hard to turn down.

Spurs, I don't think either of those teams would be attractive enough despite their history. It's a step down in terms of current position.

Europe will be the main threat. Can't see any big teams going for vardy though except for maybe utd or chelski, picking up a high performing player to boost morale with the fans. I would be surprised if he has another season like this. He should take the best offer on the table whilst he can whilst his value is high.

I don't think spurs are going to do anything in the league next year. When was the last time United, City, Arsenal and Chelsea were so poor in the same season. United, City and Chelsea will all spend big in the summer and will have new managers so I assume service will be resumed as usual and Tottenham will be fighting with Arsenal and Liverpool for top 4 if they are lucky.

Leicester won't sell the players I think. They're not short of money since the owner is quite well off and they will want to cement themselves as a club. I don't think they will accept this season being a one off, they'll at least want to try to get into the top 5 next year.

I booked 8 home games this season.. I only got to see them win 2 of those.. I saw 6 last season and they lost 5 of them.. !!!

Gutted last night.. After Stoke I would have thought they would have turned it on for the home fans and with a degree of will rather than urgency. We've dropped a lot of home points this season that they should be winning as title contenders; Stoke and Newcastle spring to mind and this ultimately has been the difference between Spurs and the Champions elect.

If someone said to me a top 3 finish this season, I would have taken it so it's a successful campaign as far as I'm concerned and we have a young enough side to continue to strengthen. Whether we can compete next season against the big spenders who haven't learnt a thing from this season? Who knows.

For the time being, well done Leicester City. It was good being part of your amazing fairy tale story.

Hopefully we can go and grab 2nd place now.

New managers are always a gamble. Do you really expect all of them to hit the ground running? Also, at least one of those teams is going to have the fun of the Europa League to contend with.

Also, Spur's goal difference shows that they haven't fluked their way to second place. I doubt they'll win the league next season but they'll be in the mix.

I think Spurs will be genuine contenders next year, they have the solid defence already in place and only have to strengthen in a couple of positions. Their young players are all a year better off for experience. Kane has proven he can do it in consecutive seasons, the likes of Alli and Dier have had their first full season at the top.

City are dodgy at the back and it doesn't matter how much money they've thrown at it, they're still dodgy, especially when Kompany can't keep fit. Will be interesting to see what they're like under Pep.

Arsenal are bottlers, if Wenger stays there I don't see that changing anytime soon. United are playing with the shackles on, if LVG stays there that won't change.

Chelsea should obviously improve, Liverpool could kick on as well but again, dodgy at the back.

Why would they want to go anywhere? They are the best team in England and they are in the Champions League....what would top clubs offer them that they wont get at Leicester next season?

more money and to have real madrid etc on there cv.

Players have left United at the prime simple to have Real madrid etc on there CV believe it or not.

TBH when you look at Leicsters players, is any of them actually world class players that could walk in any of the top european sides?

I can see Spurs doing a Liverpool next year after going so close, and failing to make the top 4 or lower

If Spurs do a Liverpool and sell their star talent, sure. It feels like wishful thinking on your part though. Kane can barely speak English, how would he cope with Spanish? :p

:D

I think Kane will likely stay at least for one more season, but I can see other players going (they are a selling club after all), or them bringing players in and upsetting the balance

If Spurs can keep this team together and add a few more players, they should be challenging for years to come. I worry for Leicester as despite this amazing season and Champions League next year, players will still see the attraction of moving to a bigger club, for more money and probably by fear of it being their only chance, in case Leicester plummet next season.

I think the only players that Leicester will struggle to keep are Kante and Mahrez. Both are reasonably young and very talented. The rest of the team inc. Vardy are either too old or simply not top class. Leicester have won the league this year because of a few factors:

Everyone else who would normally be competing for the league has been less than rubbish.

Leicester play massively to their strengths and have good players on form in key positions. Vardy, Mahrez and Kante have barely missed a game all season and have been consistently good.

They have had very few injuries.

Regardless of them winning the PL if big teams come knocking the players will push for a move for many reasons.

Spurs shouldn't struggle to keep their team together however they may struggle to keep their manager and I am intrigued to find out how good this Spurs side actually is. Whenever I have seen them play they are decent but not amazing. They aren't cutting sides to pieces. The games I have watched where they have stuck in 3-4 goals have been against teams that defend suicidally.

Basically next season should be a cracker.

It's over. Well played Leicester. You've been the more consistent side over 35 (and probably 38) games. Got to hand it to Ranieri for being so tactically flexible. Sometimes you need to grind out a 1-0 and Spurs haven't been capable of that.

I remember during our Champions League run under Harry Redknapp saying that it was the best side I'd ever seen. Ledley King, Scott Parker, Luca Modric, Aaron Lennon, Gareth Bale, Rafael van Der Vaart and Emmanuel Adebayor all in their pomp. It was a glorious side going forward. But it always felt like a fleeting moment. King's knees, the attentions of Real Madrid, van Der Vaart's fitness, Adebayor's desire, Redknapp's commitment. All suspect. It was incredibly enjoyable at the time but there was always storm clouds on the horizon.

This feels different. This feels like the foundation of something. Just as we're building a new stadium, it feels like Pochettino is building a new Spurs. This feels like something more than a one-season wonder. I think that's a bright future ahead for Spurs fans despite tonight's disappointment.

Excellent post.

Huge disgusting obscene sums of money the likes of which Leicester and to a certain extent Spurs will not/can't match. Vardy for example hasn't had a long career at the top to earn the mega bucks and isn't getting any younger one transfer this summer could secure his family for a couple of generations why would he not go?

I'd say Mahrez and Kante could walk into any side in the league and improve it and one or two others could do more than a job for the top sides given a chance.

Rummaging through some of stuff ... 10 years old when I drew this, what a long way the club has come since then :) 1994 Second leg League 1 Play Off Final. The actual score was 2-1 to us (not the 3-1 I had predicted), we went to Wembley and beat Derby County 2-1, one of the best days of my life, my hero Steve Walsh scored the winner and "The Silence of the RAMS" poster with Walshy wheeling away in celebration was on my bedroom wall for a good three seasons after that. One of my most treasured and fondly remembered eras as a Leicester fan that was, but winning the Premier League will surpass that easily.
