Yes, a challenge with studs aiming for someone's knee has never caused any damage or injury. Only leg breakers are red cards right?

What I'm saying is if that constitutes an automatic red card then Gerrard should be off as well for his elbow on Barry and there should be about 20 more red cards during today.

Dangerous challenges are generally stamps and two footed lunges with a players full weight behind them, those that can genuinely break legs/ankles.
