Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [23rd - 26th January 2016]

Scoreboard Administrator at Old Trafford must be the best job in the world, you can turn up an hour late for work and nobody will notice.

Sigh.

Four hours drive there, five hours drive back....10 mins of anything approaching football. I'm happy with the experience, getting to visit OT and stand in the Stretford End and cheer a shot on target (one, let's not get to crazy Louis says)

Probably the worst we've ever played, a lot of booing in the ground, every time Fellaini screwed up there were calls of 'why is he on the pitch'. Perhaps our manager should listen. Second half started stronger, Mata did really well, then the injury to Darmian broke the flow and we never recovered.

I think LvG is really destroying players, the difference between the Lingard that came into the team and the Lingard today for example. When he started he was running at people and causing problems, now he looks scared to do it.

The Glory Glory Man Utd playing at the full time whistle felt like a knife in the back.

Theatre of Dreams indeed.

lvg and his excuses are unacceptable ''they're compact with 5 defenders'' no ****. you've got 2 strikers who cost more than half of southamptons team

looks like ferguson did say 'he's gone' to me

Depends if you want someone for a quick fix (Mourinho) or someone who could actually create / build a team of younger players who may well stay with the club a long time (Pep)

Because I geniunely don't know as I didn't watch that much Barca when he was there but did he build the team of young players? I thought it was already in place? Has he ever built his own team of younger players?

LvG is now officially worse than Moyes, 3 points less than the Moyes season at this stage (and Moyes was still in the CL).

And the football is worse too. And £200m+ spent.

Mourinho please. :( (yes, I've weighed up all the pros and cons)

We are not going to get champions league. Top 3 are too far ahead and Spurs are the team to watch at the moment. Let Giggs finish off the season and see how well he does. You never know unless you try!

If we signed a couple of people to cover the current injury problems, our motivated strongest 11 could get top 4 - or at least try.

The reality is, if the league wasn't such a mess at the moment, we'd likely be in the bottom half of the table.

I'd rather give Giggs a try than stick with LvG, absolutely, but why not give Mourinho a few months with the players so he can attempt to fix it in the summer. It's not as if the squad needs a major overhaul, just a few additions. The instructions of the manager are a major problem at the moment.

Look at the players STILL at Barca who played under him (what 3 or 4 seasons after he left), would be lucky to get one or two players that length of time after Mourinho left

Its also about what Pep would do to re-invigourate the up and coming players in the youth setup - if Mourinho (with his non-history of youth development) came in, the Utd setup would probably get even worse than it already is

The latter I agree with completely, its definitely the instructions that are causing problems (which has led to motivation issues - which might cause issues for a while whoever else comes in).

The squad still needs a huge overhaul though - personally the below are who needs to be shipped out

Jones
Valencia
Blind (as a centre half at the very least)
Carrick (let his contract expire at the end of the season)
Fellaini
Powell
Young
Rooney (some how although it would be difficult)

I would add Mata to that list (and can already hear the "nooooooo") - on his day he can be brilliant, its just those days are getting incredibly more rare. I think he is more effective from a wide position for us than as a No 10 but we need someone with genuine pace for wide positions so its either him or Rooney that needs to leave urgently and Mata (given the wages situation) would be much easier to offload. From what I have seen at Utd Herrera is a better No 10 than Mata, the latter just disappears in that position for Utd majority of the time.

Best part of 10 players (from an already limitied squad) that need to be offloaded asap - maybe you just meant in Jan in which case fair enough. Two or three additions in the next week (I can barely see one actually arriving, let alone three - not counting this kid from Portugal which if it does get done is likely to be loaned back anyway until the summer) and Utd may just scrape into top 4 but it could still be very tough.
