Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [25th - 29th April 2015]

as mentioned above, he has said he doesn’t necessarily want a team with a massive budget, he just doesn’t want his players sold from under him year on year to a league rival, which is what happened whilst at Dortmund.

I don't think he is looking for another team that can't compete at the highest level as long as they don't sell his star players. The only way you can guarantee that is to be one of the top teams in the world and pay top salaries.

We don’t need massive surgery, the basis is there for a top 4 challenge we just need a manager that knows his best formation and knows how to set a defence and midfield up.

I'm surprised you think this. You are likely to miss out on top 4 this season with United and City being well below par for most of the season. You can expect both Manchester teams to improve a lot over the summer. I will be amazed if Liverpool start next season in a better shape than City, United, Chelsea and Arsenal.

From what I've read the Dortmund fans don’t feel betrayed at all (they could also still qualify for Europe), but after nearly a decade managing the same team he just needs a new challenge.

I know is very well loved by the fans but football fans are nutters at times so I assumed some would be put out of shape by his timing. Hopefully thats not the case as he has been immense for them.

Will he come to us? Who knows, but we would be massively negligent in not at least sounding him/his agent out about the possibility. He's a huge upgrade on Rodgers (who I want out regardless).

I agree completely. Like a lot of managers, Rogers is good when the team is firing on all cylinders and opposition are not playing great but when you come up against good and well organised teams he is found out at times.

This is also my criticism of Wenger. He doesn't adapt like the Mourinhos of this world. Klopp would improve you considerably and perhaps bring some Dortmund players with him (or not as he would feel like he was poaching from his old team).

how can liverpool not improve over the clown like attack of this season sorry fez you overate united, you seem to think a couple of big signings and you are title challenging that 150 million has not done you that well, 1 good striker with 20 goals in the season i fear liverpool would beat you to 4th this season.

I think you can flip a coin on both teams really

We have been poor for much of the season due to injuries, new manager and new tactics. When we have had a fully fit squad and had Carrick in the team we have been great. That 150m hasn't exactly been value for money so far but 60m of it was on ADM who will either be moved on for a similar amount at the end of the season or he will come good.

I don't doubt that Liverpool would have beaten us to 4th with a top striker this season but that doesn't really mean much. We have had a very average/poor season and I would hope that doesn't happen again next year.

I would much rather have our squad that Liverpools and we should improve more than Liverpool in the summer. My point was purely that unless United, City, Chelsea or Arsenal have a poor season and you have a great one I don't think you will challenge for top 4 next year. I may be proved wrong.

With the second question, for Liverpool you'd say five from Coutinho, Sterling, Can, Henderson, Sakho, Sturridge, I guess. Who'd it be for you?

Hopefully we will keep hold of De Gea.

Herrera, Mata, De Gea, AdM (potentially), Shaw, Smalling / Jones, Januzaj (potentially). And the support around them might be a bit older but Rooney, Young, Carrick etc are not going to retiring for a while. Carricks role requires very little pace and Rooney is only 29.

Out of Liverpools squad the only players I would really want who would improve us are Sterling, Sturridge (hopefully his injury issues aren't long term) and Coutinho.

See, there's potential in that list... but I wouldn't say it's head and shoulders above the Liverpool combo. Certainly not such a difference that I'd much rather have one above the other. Especially given the big question marks over De Gea/AdM/Shaw/Smalling/Jones, and if Mata will fit in long term - I'm not writing them all off... just stating there are big question marks for each.

Personal choice I guess but I would much rather have our squad as it is and I would hope that we buy the better players in the summer as well.

I think what can't really be argued with is that due to ffp and our monster Adidas sponsorship deal, we have almost unrivalled spending power. What we won't know is whether LvG and co will use the money wisely, or if the signings will pay off. So far, the players we've been linked to are mostly players that in my opinion would improve the squad considerably (Gundogan, Hummels and Depay are the three I'm most keen on).

However, of the £150 million we spent last year, I'd say that really only Blind has been well worth the money, and recently Herrera. Di Maria looked great to start with but has really faded badly, Rojo has been in and out of the team due to injuries and loss of form, Shaw has had similar problems, and the less said about Falcao the better. United need at least one CB, a RB, at least one CM, a winger, and at least one striker (Falcao is bound to leave and I'm not convinced by RvP any more), and that's assuming we hang on to our current players.

It's going to be an interesting transfer window this summer. There are several teams that need players in the same position (pretty much every one of the top 5 or 6 teams is after a striker), and some teams need some extensive rebuilding. I can see the big teams going after the same players, and that's before you even consider teams like PSG, Real Madrid, etc that will also be after reinforcements. I can see a lot of teams missing out on their transfer targets.

Or whether you'll continue to spend big at all. It's not a coincidence that while you remained in the CL spots there was no heavy spending and it took for you to fall out of the CL spots for the purse strings to be loosened.

Better than the 130mil+ liverpool spent.

Don't scare me like that, BBC :(

I saw that too and just shook my head in disbelief they'd nicked it, but FlashScore popped up showing 1-2 thankfully!

Every team has had injuries so that just doesnt carry water because you will have more next season and you have spent 135 million net, and despite people saying united can afford that i bet your debt rose again when you add the interest.
City & Chelsea dont make that much more then liverpool so unless they find away around FFP, liverpool should find them easier to compete against over the next 10 years then the last 10 years.

I dont see united challenging for the title anytime soon either, its Arsenal or Chelsea for the next few years United have for once punched above their weight.
