Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [26th - 31st January 2018]

Alderweireld for Spurs. So both teams missing a CB... but apart from that both have the rest of the best elevens available?

Rose didn't play either last night, although Davies has stepped up, he doesn't have the pace that Rose can use to exploit.

Funny.

Been loads of instances where Man Utd players have left their foot in and kicked out but people only mention Alli...

Lets be fair, the comments aimed at Alli aren't based on that one challenge are they? Yea, there were a couple of naughty/petulant fouls from Utd last night but I wouldn't say any one of those players have a habit for doing that sort of thing. Alli on the other hand does and as somebody else said, he's doing it in a game that you're comfortably winning. It's plain stupid. How many times over the last few seasons have you watched a game and thought Alli was lucky not to have been sent off? There's been plenty and the more stupid challenges he makes the more opposition teams will target him and it's only a matter of time before it comes back to bite him and Spurs on the arse.

I think we have to accept Pogba won't be able to play in a midfield 2, at least against the better teams. People think he can play deeper due to his size, but that's not really the case. He's closer to an attacking midfielder.

He was often nowhere near Matic which meant Spurs could run straight at the defence, which is a huge issue especially when it's Jones and Smalling. :p

We should probably just go Pogba - Matic - Herrera as a midfield 3 (perhaps even with Pogba in more of a no.10 role), then any 2 of Martial/Sanchez/Lingard behind Lukaku.

Yes. This seems obvious to me also. It would provide better balance - I have no doubt that as individual footballers Pogba and Matic are every bit as Dier and Dembele but last night they did not show it. It is Pogba that created the problems as he does not want to play that defensive role. It was actually good to see Mourinho hook him and surprisingly there was no petulance from him. What disappoints is the notion that Mata and Fellaini were going to be anymore effective in combating the control Spurs had in midfield. If you look at the line ups its hard to argue that the teams are mismatched on a player for player basis but Spurs gave United a lesson last night.

DeGea Lloris DDG everytime
Valencia Trippier AV for me although last night he was not an attacking option
Jones Sanchez Jones had a mare but he can do a job especially in a 3
Smalling Vertongen Smalling is not improving. Vertongen solid
Young Davies Young isnt a left back but Daives instn yet either
Dembele Pogba Pogba >>> but not when asked to defend
Matic Dier I actually think Dier is a better player. Matic too slow
Lingard Alli Alli is a horrible footballer, talented but JL has stepped up
Martial Son Martial is turning into an engma. I prefer Rashford. Son was excellent in all areas
Sanchez Erikssen Erriksen ran the match. I'd have him in the United team any day
Lukaku Kane Kane's ability to hold up and build an attack is far before RLs

I reckon there are too many 'big ego' people within United at the moment, and I can't see it ending well in the long run.

Because Utd were being played off the park, getting frustrated and struggling to keep up. Alli was comfortable, running freely through the defence, then just pointlessly and obviously kicked Alexis' trailing leg to trip him for no benefit, he wasn't through, there was no obvious pass on. It was completely out of place.

Why would anybody want to grab Herrera round the neck? He's such a loveable person.

Man Utd fans are such bad losers they have to make compilation videos of anyone touching their players and then leave out things like Valencia totally wiping out Dele Alli in the box. Valencia also wiped out Son and got away with it. He was lucky to still be on the pitch.

Yeah but it was funny.

It really didn't help playing Sanchez last night either. Just because you sign someone new doesn't mean to throw him straight in the deep end. Players no matter how good they are need to be able to fit in with the players around him. It is normally okay in the Summer because you have pre season and all the friendlies. That isn't the case in the cold dark days of the January transfer window.

Carragher and Neville about to do an analysis on Sky Sports for anyone interested (also going over the transfer window).
