Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [26th - 31st January 2018]

A shocking performance from start to finish. The early goal shell-shocked the team and they just couldn't recover from it.

Hard to assign too much blame, nobody was at it tonight... it happens. Spurs were very good.

Spurs deserve it - even with a few of their players being real ****s

Utd just haven't been on it at all tonight - not dis-similar to the Huddersfield performance earlier in the season
Yes. They have looked clueless and lacking leadership. Mourinho must be fizzing about Pogba - another big game where he just hasnt turned up with the correct attitude. Rally surprised that he thought Mata was likely to help change the game when clearly the team lacked energy and bite in midfield. Lingard unlucky to be subbed to be fair he looked like he wanted to go forward.

Presumably you’re most disappointed in Pogba, Lukaku, Sanchez, and Martial? You buy expensive players in part to show up in these big games... none of them did. Defensive mistakes cost you, but they created hardly anything/failed to get control in midfield/etc.

Absolutely, Pogba and Lukaku more than Sanchez and Martial, they at least tried. Matic and Pogba were anonymous for the most part and the defence were shocking aside from De Gea.

It felt like Spurs had their foot on the gas and we couldn't do anything about it, they were very good and shut the entire team down. Any side would have trouble against that I think.

Paul Hayward from the Telegraph.

Made me think of what I said recently, with the talk of Sanchez playing behind Lukaku and therefore Pogba being in a two with Matic. Doesn’t Pogba need (/want) two midfielders around him/to have licence to be the forward midfielder?

Yes, I think it needs to be Herrera/Matic/Pogba at least against the better sides. Sanchez/Martial/Lukaku in attack.

Dembele has Pogba in his pocket

Spurs were really on it and Man Utd couldn’t get going. There wasn’t much leadership on the pitch for Utd- lots of whinging but not much grit.

Shocker of a result for Chelsea, well played by Bournemouth. I don’t think Conte is going to last too long now. Quite funny what Giroud said in his conference, something along the lines that he thinks the Chelsea squad are over achieving lol.

Not surprised about Utd losing though.

You can see why Pep's getting annoyed at officials lately. Those challenges by McClean and Phillips were potential season enders, the Phillips one in particular was horrible.

McClean is a nasty piece of work, he always has been. I don't blame Pep for being annoyed, the smaller teams in particular get frustrated at seeing so little of the ball and being run ragged and lose their heads, it's happened far too much to City.

Rubbish from United tonight, but trying to play Pogba in a midfield two alongside Matic is always going to go badly. We badly need a decent CM/DM alongside Matic so that Pogba has more freedom to go forward. The games he's looked best in this season (Everton away for example) he has played much further forward. He clearly doesn't want to spend large parts of the game defending and he's not very good at it either. I think Herrera alongside Matic should be tried. Fair play to Spurs tonight though, they worked harder and dominated us in almost every aspect of the game.

It seemed really naiive from Mourinho to only play 2 in the middle, almost as if he bought into the media hype of playing Sanchez et al. and playing super attacking football.

Pogba has to be one of the most frustrating footballers I've ever seen, he's got so much ability but every time he gets the ball he has to take loads of touches and then do something silly or try and beat a man in completely the wrong area, like he's trying to prove his worth with every touch.

I think we have to accept Pogba won't be able to play in a midfield 2, at least against the better teams. People think he can play deeper due to his size, but that's not really the case. He's closer to an attacking midfielder.

He was often nowhere near Matic which meant Spurs could run straight at the defence, which is a huge issue especially when it's Jones and Smalling. :p

We should probably just go Pogba - Matic - Herrera as a midfield 3 (perhaps even with Pogba in more of a no.10 role), then any 2 of Martial/Sanchez/Lingard behind Lukaku.

Curious - who else in the Spurs team do you think as being 'real ****s' ?

Apart fom ther first 5 minutes or so ( first 11 seconds excluded) United looked very dangerous and missed a couple of great chances - then they were domninated in every position.
