Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [27th - 28th August 2011]

Wigan don't look bad this season actually. I know QPR could have gotten something from the game and they haven't played anyone yet, but i've seen enough to think that they will be competitive against mid-table/bottom-half teams. Rodallega and Moses will cause some teams problems i think

+++ Great result and play today!
- The ref has a complete shocker.

Jamie Redknapp made a good point (for once) today, we were up against Cahill and Knight this afternoon; who would they prefer playing against, Carroll/Suarez or Kuyt/Suarez?

Knight's no awesome defender by any means, but he's built like a brick and iirc as tall as Carroll? its no shock really Kenny went with Kuyt and Suarez today.

Think too many people before the game complaining we needed Carroll for this game think he's something he's not. He's not He-Man and he won't simply bully out physical defenders like those at Bolton like they'r 5 foot spanish midgets.

...all this carp about Andy Carroll's worth and what he has done since joining Liverpool.... if you compare it to what Torres has done for Chelsea, we got a bargain.

He's a big strong Geordie who is great in the air and with his feet... he will improve given time. KK is building a squad of players, and we will ( as Utd have done for years ) have to have the ability to change strategy and the way we play. So like for like Suarez is unrealistic. Andy Carroll will be a very exciting player for us...

Arsenal are now my second team as I am sick of people having a go at Wenger.. their most decorated manager in history. He not only changed Arsenal, he changed football in this country.... I hope Wenger goes on to win the Champions league.... just to stick it to the so called expert pundits who are not fit to clean Wenger's shoes!!

Meh, Suarez/Robinson, not a penalty, Knight, penalty, handball, not a penalty.

The Knight one, very hard to see the hand pull on the ankle for the ref, and the linesman has no chance. The other two would simply have been the wrong decision, the only nutso thing they got wrong was the backpass, and for a premiership ref, that is a stonkingly good game.

As for Torres, I've been saying for 3-4 years that Torres is one of the most out and out dirty players in the league, he CONSTANTLY stamps, kicks, elbows, etc, etc. He never stops, other people do mental challenges, but he just flat out cheats all game long every game, he'll go for a block and make sure he kicks someone in the ankle with follow through, every damn time, then you had that penalty spot thing which was so bad I've never seen anyone else do it. I hate the guy, completely.

Started about the same time JT consistently kicked him in the ribs in a CL game every time Torres went down.
Still.. best bud's now and all that

You're only as good as your last game(well season or two) and based on as much, Wenger IS crap, its as simple as that.

Fergie is the only manager I can think of who has been good for as long, there are COUNTLESS other managers who do great for a couple years, maybe even 4-5, but after that become completely crap AT THAT CLUB, then go on to be successful again SOMEWHERE ELSE. This happens so often it shouldn't be even remotely surprising, most managers idea's get stale, most managers start to let their personal feelings of players cloud their judgement and they start trying to build a friendly family of players rather than a clinical football team.

Its happened at hundreds of clubs, yet Arsenal can't seem to spot its happened and ruining the squad.

Wenger WAS truly great at Arsenal, he isn't anymore, why can't people simply accept that someone can be great at their job and become bad. Everything has changed, our tactics, our formation, or squad, or philosphy(passing wasn't our philosphy, passing AND all out attack AND vision AND style AND creativity AND counter attacking was what Arsenal were, now we pass.......... and lack the rest, NOT the same), I think if he got back to his old style, he could even be good at Arsenal again, but he's not a manager who knows how to get a defence working, hasn't got 4-5-1 working, and can't train a DM to save his life....... so what? Would Fergie build a fantasti 4-5-1 defensive, boring, 10 men behind the ball side, no, thats not the kind of manager he is.

The thing with Wenger is he seems too stubborn and probably has too much pride to admit 4-5-1 doesn't work, so he keeps trying it hoping it will work so he can say he was right all along.

...and iirc as tall as Carroll?....

He's actually a fair bit taller than Carroll.

I like the fact people are complaining about Carroll missing out and worrying about where Gerrard's going to fit in etc. It shows that for the first time in a while we've got genuine strength in depth.

But still won't finish in the top four. :p

In all seriousness though, you are looking a lot better than I thought you would, and there is a chance I'll have to eat my words come May.

Without wanting to sound too pesimistic, with Arsenal's current squad AND Wilshire I see is struggling to stay in 5th with a very slim chance of 4th unless Liverpool's new signings lose a lot of form and the team goes kaput. They are playing winning football, the quality of players matters, but not as much as going out to win, thats why Arsenal's all out attack football worked, and Bayern's, and Barca's, and Utd, and Chelsea at their best are all out attack and Inter....... okay so thats one blip :p

Arsenal got less and less attacking and we've gotten less and less good? Chelsea's complete all out attack carried over from Ranieri is what won them the titles, and they got worse over time getting more defensive. They had great strikers and Duff/Robben/Cole/Melchiot?(can't remember which right back they started off with) bombing up the wings like mad(and with quality). Don't forget in Ancelotti's winning season they played a LOT of 4-4-2 with Anelka and Drogba upfront, and they were great, then they dropped back to a less attacking formation reliant on crap wingers, and they weren't anywhere near as good.

Liverpool are going out to win games, and thats half the damn battle, the half Arsenal have lost for years. We've had the squad, but not the mentality/tactics/formation/attacking speed, up till last season and now this season, when the squad is no longer good enough.

If Wilshire's injury drags on and Arsenal's replacements aren't very good, we could struggle to get in Europe at all tbh.

I agree, I think you will definately pose a challenge for United this year. I think this year is the season to cash in on Gerrard as well and build a new team without him. You look better than I thought you would to be fair. I thought you might nick 4th but I think you will run closer to the top than that for most of the season.

As for Cahill, well there used to be a time when you picked up a player with a year left on his contract for peanuts. For some reason this year Bolton think they can ask for greater than 10 million. I think what Arsenal offered was fair, 8m tops. Bolton have far more to lose than Arsenal.

So do we think Cleverley will get another start against Arsenal today or will Carrick or Fletch be brought back in?

He's impressed me so far, still rough in places of course but I'm really pleased he is getting the opportunity.

An interview with Fergie seemed to suggest that Berba won't be playing a major part in first team games until the CL starts up so Welbeck will no doubt be fighting with Chica for a place alongside Rooney for a little while.

United are going to tear Arsenal a new one today. And we're going to have our seasonal embarrassment at WHL. Then a break of 2 weeks for everyone to get bored and draw too many conclusions. Not going to be a good day I feel :D

On paper there is no way Arsenal can win this match.
This is the type of game united tend to balls up though.
Arsenal have nothing going for them what so ever, their 4 best midfielders no matter what DM says have either left the club, are suspended or injured, they have one striker, their defence is as dodgy as ever and their manager is suffering from a severe case of tunnel vision.
United, to all intents and purposes should be administering a beating that would leave Wenger on the verge of being sacked.
Instead I'm leaning towards a tawdry draw as the most likely outcome.
