Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [28th April - 2nd May 2012]

Did I just hear right? Downing's happy with trophies rather than league success?

Yeah he said that a few weeks ago I believe, most players would have said whatever the fans wanted or something along those lines, Downing said how he wanted trophies to show after he had retired.. Considering how little Downing has done in comparison to his price tag, I thought it would have been the perfect opportunity for him to get in the good books of the fans, clearly thats not on his mind..

Laughing stock :(

Lolerpool?

So this season so far Liverpool have Won 13, Lost 13 and drawn 10. At Anfield Liverpool have won 5, lost 4 and drawn 9. Not good, not bad.... depending on how you feel about cups.

After tonight's results Liverpool are 3 points behind Everton in the League table in 8th, ahead of Fulham on goal difference.

League's our bread and butter so to see us so low down the table with such a poor home record and still be told by Dalglish we've made progress is literally humiliating. Win or lose on Saturday the club need better guidance from the touchline and a new direction in the summer.

You might mock but give him time and you'll feel the same as all Liverpool supporters :p

Thankfully we won't, we don't have any expectations for this current England side so simply can't be disappointed, I suppose Liverpool fans will have much higher expectations anyway.

Liverpool could finish in 9th this season which makes the Downing quote seem silly, a cup run is great, especially winning one, but finishing so low in league simply can't be ignored. I saw a stat that if you finish 9th it'll be the lowest finish since you were promoted in 61/62

Sorry, made a little mistake with the home loss. Forgot to add today's loss so it's now:

I agree, I'd rather be playing in the Champions league than winning cups but finishing down the league table. Mind you, you do want your club to be winning something.

With us signing Podolski and the supposed completed signing of Jan Vertonghen (according to some Dutch sources) it looks like Arsenal are finally getting serious in the transfer market and getting the players we want in early and letting the rest fight over whoever remain.

Ultimately, if City win the title it will be because Fergie was scared to lose and played a team designed to not lose. Winners don't do that, Barcelona lost a game, but they've also won game after game, title after title by never being afraid to lose and never going out to defend and get lucky. It's a losing tactic no idea what Fergie was thinking or how such a "winner" of a manager could ever end up resorting to that kind of tactic.

But sadly it has happened all too often this season, and several times over recent years. I don't think there is a team around that is as chameleonic as United and it does my head in, we constantly blunt our strengths in order to hide our weaknesses instead of forcing the opposition to deal with us. Our midfield is ****, but by playing two wingers and two strikers it at least drags players out of the central area. Playing as narrow as we did put huge pressure on our midfield, none of whom are especially capable in tight spaces, and it was painful to watch.

By playing as we did, not only were we dominated in the middle but also on the wings where Zabaleta and Clichy had total licence to attack because there was no-one in front of them. City didn't make the best of the space they had, but it meant they at least always had the freedom of the pitch to relieve the little pressure we could put them under. We were so exposed down our left hand side it was embarrassing, and either Nani or Young would have done a far better job covering LB than Giggs. Park was ostensibly our most attacking midfielder but was also asked to mark Yaya Toure, who was constantly making forward runs so we were left light in both defence and attack as a result.

Our team selection was baffling and substitutions even worse.

What concerns me most is that 3 years ago we lost in Rome to Barcelona and allegedly set about bridging the gap to that side, yet here we are a significantly weaker side with none of the problem issues addressed. We have achieved much better consistency against the lower placed sides in the league but our performances in the crunch games (Basel, Bilbao, Liverpool in the cup, City x2) have been shocking.

Last of all, the thing that leaves me most disappointed is this United side is not even exciting to watch any more, there is just a total lack of fight, energy and enthusiasm in our performances. I'd have been happy with the result last night if we could look back on all the great chances we created and good football we played.

This is not a "Fergie out" post but I have wondered for a while if some of the results we have achieved this season have been in spite of his decisions. It is a damning but not surprising statistic that we have not won a game after going behind all year because we have looked utterly clueless on the sidelines at times this year.

1-1 v Sunderland
1-1 v Norwich
0-0 v Swansea
1-1 v Blackburn
0-0 v Stoke
1-2 v Wigan
1-1 v Villa
0-1 v WBA
0-1 v Fulham

Wow, that's ignoring the clashes against the big 5 as well where Liverpool haven't picked up a single win. The crazy thing is it seems like we were talking about Liverpool's poor home form prior to Christmas but the reality is it's actually been even worse since the end of March given the fixtures Liverpool have played. A maximum 6 home league wins all season is shocking, dare I say some teams have probably gone down with better home record.

I'm sure it will end up being just one of those things and it will improve next season..... Liverpool will just be **** away from home instead :p
