Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [2nd - 7th March 2018]

Wenger needs to announce he's leaving at the end of the season.

That gets the fans off his back and gives the team a reason to fight for it

No, he needs to be fired flat out, the players need to learn there are consequences. Not, if you're that freaking bad you can see out the year and go when you choose to do what is best for you. No, send a sign, Wenger gets fired, give Silva a contract to the end of the season, it's a perfect test for how well he can do, tell the players that you play poorly there are consequences and if they don't buck up they'll be gone too.

20 years ago, Arsene revolutionised the game in England.

Trouble is, the game has moved on and he isn't able to keep up with the changes

He didn't, this is the most overblown nonsense that keeps getting regurgitated. EVERYONE in EVERY sport started to take eating, training, and sports science in general much more seriously in the mid 90s, everyone. Also Arsenal were pretty damn successful from what ~88-96, they won a couple league titles, they won a few domestic cups and they won a european cup. People act like Arsenal hadn't won anything for 20 years before Wenger took over. Wenger took over the second richest club in the country with a phenomenal defence and a underperforming manager who didn't know how to attack and then Wenger brought in some brilliant attacking talent. Without that defence that was built for him Arsenal haven't done anything since. Since Adams, Keown and everyone they trained with day in day out was gone Arsenal have been a completely different side with all the same issues then as now, no leadership, poor defence, terrible mentality. It was the growth in money, the CL money, the stadium income that simply separated us from everyone but Utd in finances, then Chelsea and City got their money.

Wenger didn't revolutionise anything, Arsenal were already winning titles with basically that team, he brought in a lot of attacking talent and made them train the same way 98% of sportsmen across the world were starting to train. There were a few hold out old school managers who thought drinking the night before a game was cool but they were few and far between.

Summer mass exodus

First off, who wants any of these players, second, who will give meh players bigger wages than Arsenal are currently giving these players?

It's going to be exceptionally difficult for a new manager to get rid of half the squad that he absolutely has to and another quarter of the squad he'd like to in perfect circumstances. Ozil we're stuck with for years, I don't think even a CHinese team will want to give him that kind of money. THey want showmen, they want people filled with energy who will look brilliant, not a lazy guy who can't be bothered.

Cech/Kos/Monreal are old, no one will want to give them real money at this stage. Unless Mourinho makes another bone headed move and wants to give Ozil the same or even more wages to take him to Utd I can't see who will take him off our hands.

DM your hate for ozil is unreal, he appears lazy but I'm sure there was a state he does the most running out of your team and assists the most.

Arsenal sqaud isn't the worst, the problem is as you have said for a decade is Wenger

It's got nothing at all to do with him appearing lazy, nothing. There is also no stat that says he runs the most, he doesn't. This is what happened, people noticed that Ozil was terrible consistently in the biggest games, largely because he's put under more pressure by better midfielders and better defenders track the players ahead of him better making cute passes much harder to find. AT some point after 6+ months of criticism the entire media suddenly went on this campaign of disproving that Ozil was lazy.... something literally no one was accusing him of. They trotted out stats like how much he ran on average, which is entirely pointless when the criticism was specifically that he disappeared in the big games. If you disappear in 10 out of 50 games a year, a stat covering all 50 proves absolutely nothing. You could run 12km in 40 games a year and 2km in the other 10 and you'd have an average stat of 10km.

Assists also doesn't mean much alone. He takes freekicks and corners, there are numerous games against the biggest and the worst opposition where he'll be dire for 89minutes but take a corner someone else won and we get a goal off it.... but in part because of that terrible performance we lose 5-1. Good players are good for the majority of the 90 minutes in the most important games and even if they don't get an assist, maybe someone else doesn't get an assist himself but we win that game 1-0 in part because of a brilliant performance over 90 minutes.

The best teams have players who perform over 90 minutes consistently, Ozil does not perform in the most important games, he never has. Notice how in summer and jan we got offers from more than one club for Sanchez. We got no offers for Ozil from any top clubs, just the same kind of media interest that managers/agents push out there when trying to get a bigger contract. Why didn't Utd offer 20mil for a guy out of contract just to see if we'd take it?

Ozil was bad today let alone against City in both games where he was absolutely useless, he's been useless in the round of 16 for 3 years and poor in most of our other bigger games.

He's monumentally over rated, he wasn't worth the ~200k a week he was on, he's absolutely not worth the 350k a week he's on now, no one else thought he was worth grabbing at over 250k a week(presumably at least an early offer from Arsenal) so no one bid on him. He's not lazy, lazy isn't the issue, he's a giant girls blouse, he's weak, he doesn't like to fight, he has terrible motivation, he has no fight in him. He cruises around at the best of times against the likes of Brighton but the lack of quality from other sides means he still gets time and space and helps make things happen, but against the big teams his style is shown up as useless and he quickly gives up when things aren't going well for him.

KDB is better than Ozil in every aspect of his game, he's on much less money. In a game City are 4-0 up in, KDB is still making tackles, he's still working hard, he doesn't let people just run past him unopposed because he thinks he's better than that. KDB is the kind of player who would deserve 350k a week, he turns up in the big games, he doesn't give up, he doesn't act like he doesn't have to help the team. He's exactly the guy who shows up for 89 minutes in almost every single game. Ozil is KDB, without the energy, work rate, consistency, motivation, strength or attitude required to be a truly top player.

Since 2013 when Ozil signed for Arsenal he has the most assists in the league.

It's Wenger making us look poor at the moment for the dip in performance. He is a different player for Germany and was once regarded as the best No 10 in the world whilst at Real Madrid.

He is just as poor with Germany in bigger games, he disappeared in latter stages of all the competitions he's been in. He wasn't even heavily involved in the Brazil game, also at Real same deal. He wasn't as good. They won 3 in 4 CLs after he left.... he was poor in the rounds they lost when he was there.

Most assists is a SINGLE aspect of who he is as a player. If one guy gets lots of assists but is bad in the big games and you lose all the big games as a result while another team has players with less assists but more assists in total, who play better, who win the big games and win important titles? Ozil completely ignores 70% of every game, he doesn't track back, he doesn't try to tackle, he doesn't put in a lot of effort which also means he's more available for the ball. We've also had Giroud who has been phenomenal from corners he takes, etc.

Chelsea, City, they aren't all single player teams who constantly pass the ball to a single player to get all the assists.

It's not about goals or assists, it's about performances. The best players put in great performances and get goals and assists, some players get assists without the performances.

I quite literally highlighted all these issues with Ozil BEFORE he signed for Arsenal, describing exactly how Ozil performs now for Arsenal based on how he played for Real and Germany. He hasn't changed in any way as a player. He's playing for a worse team that makes his weaknesses far more visible, nothing else.

This is one of the worst halves of football i've seen in a long time.

I didn't realise Chelsea had turned into West Brom, incredibly negative and just downright crap from them. City too many touches, too many backwards/sideways passes. Just absolutely rubbish to watch.

That's a goal created from pure desire to win the ball, the attitude of City players vs our lot is depressing to see.

Chelsea are begging for someone up top to hold up play, if only they had a striker on the bench....
