Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [6th - 11th April 2012]

The problem is that they've claimed they did see the incident. That's the reason why he can't be punished by the FA now.

Ahhh right, thanks for clearing that up...thought they didnt see it. LOL oh well rageface goes back in its box for the time being:p

Tbh, that makes it far worse in my eyes. Simply because the officials saw the incident but made a mistake in not sending him off, Balotelli gets let off with a terrible tackle. It's ridiculous.

Of course, not condoning...was simply shocked that the officials as you say saw it but he wasnt sent off, thankfully karma ended up getting him in the end and he was sent off but in all honesty he should have been off when he committed that tackle on Song.

Agreed. Although its probably all anecdotal now as he probably won't play for City again anyway, but this decision shows that the rules are just plain wrong and need to be changed.

All this 'if the ref saw it, we can't do anything about it' is ****. The ref clearly didn't see it or he would have been off. The ref may have been looking at play, but he obviously didn't see the incident clearly, or he bottled it.

It just doesn't make sense. Just because the ref claimed to have seen it, does that make the tackle any less horrendous? No, of course it doesn't. So if he had been charged if the ref had missed it, he should be charged if the ref did see it but didn't take appropriate action at the time.

I'd like to know what the 4th official was doing as well, seeing as the incident was right in front of him.

/rant over:p

I dont know off the top of my head who was ref for that game but i would be interested to see if he is given a fixture for the next week or two

Atkinson. I'm pretty sure that I read that it's been confirmed that him, the lino's and the 4th official won't be punished in anyway.

The problem isn't the fact that the ref made a mistake, the problem is the FA's rule that they can't correct that mistake. Take Rooney's elbow against Wigan as an example (and I'm not using it because it's Rooney/Utd but because it's illustrates my point best); the ref see's Rooney and the Wigan player clash and it could very easily been seen at first sight as just a coming together. It turns out that Rooney actually elbowed the Wigan player but because the ref saw the incident (although not completely), the FA won't punish him. It's hard to be critical of the ref if he's genuinely not seen the incident clearly enough to make the correct call.

To be fair I don't think Atkinson had a chance to see it as there where 2 players in the way, it's the Linesman and the 4th official who must have 'seen' it.

The FA's stand on this sucks, they have proved in the past they can ban players when the ref has seen something. If Alex Song had broken his leg would the FA still be doing the same?

In related news, according to footballontv no terrestrial channel has the mersey semi - its an ESPN exclusive according to them.

Surely thats wrong for an FA Cup semi-final?

ITV has the Spurs game.

Thats the thing, Atkinson probably didnt see it but if the linesman and 4th official has seen the incident...then why wasnt Atkinson pulled to one side and something was said about it??

Like i and others have said, its a bloody stupid rule that the FA have in place and i do wonder what they would have done had Song broken his leg...just luckily for him, his foot wasnt planted as it could have been extremely nasty that.

hate to admit it..........but I agree with you:D

I know common sense is seemingly impossible to find at the FA (and the FIA come to mention it, but thats a different subject lol), but both decisions made /announced last night are a complete joke.

The Song tackle was so obviously a straight red, maybeMB was careless/ reckless (rather than being intentionally violent/dangerous) but it was still a potential leg-breaker

The QPR red was just idiotic (even if the lino made a bad mistake, he is human / without aid of replays etc) , why that wasnt recinded is just bonkers

Wigan: Al Habsi, Alcaraz, Caldwell, Figueroa, Boyce, McCarthy, McArthur, Beausejour, Moses, Di Santo, Maloney. Subs: Pollitt, Crusat, Ben Watson, Gomez, Sammon, Diame, Stam.

Man Utd: De Gea, Jones, Ferdinand, Evans, Evra, Valencia, Giggs, Carrick, Young, Rooney, Hernandez. Subs: Amos, Smalling, Park, Nani, Welbeck, Cleverley, Pogba.

Not Giggs in midfield again. Is Cleverley not going to get a chance? He's been back for a while now and has barely been used.
