Are the bookies paying out on City yet?

Is the Premier League about to become like the Bundesliga?

I think City are a good shout to win the Champions League they're that good at the moment

Another pathetic tactical performance. Why rest players on Saturday then play a team that's built to attack on the counter against a team that was always going to sit back against us?

Didn't Everton play even more defensively than Palace? You can't criticise him for leaving Coutinho & Firmino out at the weekend and then again for playing them today. We could and should have beaten Everton comfortably, today though we were really poor - sometimes you just have those days when these things happen. Nigh on every side we play parks the bus and we've not had many problems breaking them down prior to today.

I'm happy being second to them. they've been outstanding this season. For some reason small team fans seem to see this as a chance to attack united rather than looking at how poor they've been.

yeh. pretty much the same as spurs got in the past. you spent a little bit more than us though.

Pretty sure you aren't allowed to score with your arm, intentional or not.
Would be interesting to know if this is true. The ball clearly goes in off Solanke's arm so it's difficult to be overly ****ed off but it was clearly accidental, deflecting twice before hitting his arm.

Hernandez off the crossbar! Jesus christ we really want to lose this game.
Luckily West Ham had a disallowed goal lol.

But meh it’s that time of the year with our usual Xmas implosion.....oh wait we are nowhere near the top but the hell that matters...we always find a way to totally screw up our chances lol

I don’t really find it funny any more :(

From my point of view the rule basically says that you are not allowed to gain an advantage by using your arm.

As a defender as long as the ball hits your arm without you having a chance to get it out of the way and you haven't put your arm in an unnatural position you are fine. There is usually a large amount of chance as to what would have happened without the arm there in most cases. It would be hard to argue that a goal would have been scored when it hits an arm most places in the box. If you are on the goal line and it hits your arm a penalty will probably be given. The outcome at that point is clear; without your arm the ball would be in the goal.

Same with accidental handball to score a goal. You are definitely gaining an undisputed advantage by the ball hitting your arm before it goes in so it should be a free kick.

Thats how I see it anyway.

I can recall the Utd - Real CL game where Nani was sent off, in that game Rafael handled on the goal line which stopped a goal but no penalty was given as it was deemed accidental. I'd be all for any handball, whether intentional or not, that gains a clear advantage to be penalised but as far as I'm aware that's not the rules.

Unless there's something specific in the rules regarding scoring with a handball, which you suggested there was, then by the letter of the law Solanke's goal should have stood. Solanke neither moves his arm to the ball nor has he intentionally put it in a position to make it likely that the ball will hit it - a cross flicked off the defenders boot, onto his chest and onto his arm. It was completely accidental.

Being the boring nob I am the rules state

Handling the ball involves a deliberate act of a player making contact with the ball with the hand or arm.
The following must be considered:
• the movement of the hand towards the ball (not the ball towards the hand)
• the distance between the opponent and the ball (unexpected ball)
• the position of the hand does not necessarily mean that there is an offence
• touching the ball with an object held in the hand (clothing, shinguard, etc.) is an offence
• hitting the ball with a thrown object (boot, shinguard, etc.) is an offence The goalkeeper has the same restrictions on handling the ball as any other player outside the penalty area. Inside their penalty area, the goalkeeper cannot be guilty of a handling offence incurring a direct free kick or any related sanction but can be guilty of handling offences that incur an indirect free kick.

So yeah nothing to do with gaining an advantage as every handball arguably gives you an advantage. (What if it was the player who made the assist accidentally handled it, you wouldn't have the ref stop the goal then usually)

However, 'spirit of the game' is mentioned several times throughout, but it does mentioned 'within the framework of the Laws of the Game'. I don't know if this allows them to make the decision the ref did last night but I'd be glad if it was always enforced how it was yesterday. (Ball is not going to hit another part of his body other than his arm which is well away from the side of his body

Decisions will be made to the best of the referee`s ability according to the Laws of the Game and the ‘spirit of the game’ and will be based on the opinion of the referee who has the discretion to take appropriate action within the framework of the Laws of the Game.

Reference is made in Law 5 to referees operating within the framework of the Laws of the Game and the ‘spirit of the game’. Referees are expected to use common sense and to apply the ‘spirit of the game’ when applying the Laws of the Game, especially when making decisions relating to whether a match takes place and/or continues.

lol@this one though. I wonder if this was in Ovrebo's rulebook in 2009 :D

The IFAB expects the referee to make a decision within the ‘spirit’ of the game – this often involves asking the question, “what would football want/expect?”

It's definitely a spirit of the game scenario. Just let the game be settled without contention.
