I can recall the Utd - Real CL game where Nani was sent off, in that game Rafael handled on the goal line which stopped a goal but no penalty was given as it was deemed accidental. I'd be all for any handball, whether intentional or not, that gains a clear advantage to be penalised but as far as I'm aware that's not the rules.

I don't remember that to be honest but from a search I found a video of him stopping a goal vs RM and the video says "Rafael red card for handball against RM" so I would be amazed if they didn't get a penalty if the player got sent off.

The problem with what you are saying with handball is that if the rules were as you would like, players would start trying to hit arms in the box for an easy penalty.

Unless there's something specific in the rules regarding scoring with a handball, which you suggested there was, then by the letter of the law Solanke's goal should have stood. Solanke neither moves his arm to the ball nor has he intentionally put it in a position to make it likely that the ball will hit it - a cross flicked off the defenders boot, onto his chest and onto his arm. It was completely accidental.

I don't think there is anything specifically about it but its a very simple cause and effect decision for a referee. Did it hit his hand then go in. If yes that is a clear and massive game changing event and should be stopped. Hitting someones arm in the box elsewhere is usually very much up for debate as to what would have happened if the arm wasn't hit.

He didn't get sent off and no penalty was awarded, I assume the title of the video is suggesting he should have been rather than was sent off.

And I should have been clearer, I was referring to incidents like yesterday or the Rafael handball. If you've ended up directly scoring or controlled the ball which has lead to a clear attempt on goal or directly stopped a goal with a handball then a foul should be given regardless of intent imo.

As I've said, I'd be in favour of this sort of thing but, as far as I'm aware, this isn't the rules.

The rules on handball are really odd. The whole thing about something being deliberate and intentional is way too difficult for a referee to judge. Post-match one ref said that technically within the rules it wasn't handball because it wasn't deliberate, but that morally and in the spirit of the game it was a handball. The rule really needs rewriting imo, how is a ref supposed to know a player's intent? In fact I think intent should be taken out of every situation in football, only the player who is adjudged to have committed an offence can know whether it was intentional or not, you're asking too much of the refs to infer intent. You can get sent off for reckless behaviour even if you didn't intend to hurt the opponent, so it's weird that intent is still floating around the game.

As far as I'm concerned the rule should be that if the player gains an advantage by handballing it, intentional or not, then it's deemed a handball. They could still consider whether it was possible to get the arm/hand out of the way, and an arm that was down by the side of the body should be less likely to result in a free kick/penalty.

Jose has been asked to explain his pre match comments at the weekend (presumably about City diving) I assume the video of Jesus diving and not being punished will be sufficient? As always great that they're looking to punish the guy suggesting they dive rather than the guy diving though, sterling example as always FA.

Did Eddie Howe warn yesterdays ref about Utd being divers? Herrera dived vs City so it would be a fair thing to say obviously.
