Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [9th - 13th September 2011]

Jaaskelainen always looked like he was a good keeper, but over the last year he's looked far less solid and gotten worse. Jaded, perhaps.

He doesn't look as good but, the defence is soooo open, Knight has always been a truly awful defender, and I hope people realise just how crap Reo Coker is, keep seeing people talk about him as being decent, a good low cost choice, solid player, etc, etc. Cover infront of the defence, haven't seen it so far this season, didn't see it at Villa, or West Ham, or anywhere, he's utterly useless.

We've for 4-5 years now had a fairly unattacking league, teams happy to sit back, play the 4-5-1, even the top teams, Chelsea/Utd aren't anywhere near as attacking as a decade ago, or they weren't anyway.

This year City, Utd, playing far more offensively, great movement, with Young I think they now have two very good constantly moving wingers who pull the defenders ALL over the place with no ability to plug the gaps. Its exactly when a team does that to you that someone as crap as Reo Coker not doing his job becomes so obvious.

Key to attack, lots of movement, lots of support, lots of numbers, Utd this season have been commiting more people forwards than, well, ever really.

Look at Arsenal, you can have someone who sits back and rarely gets forward, like Song, who also isn't very good defensively, or you can put someone half decent getting forward in there, you lose nothing defensively, you gain in attacking power.

Carrick, Fletcher, or Anderson and Cleverley, either one willing to get in and support, much closer toa 4-4-2 tha previously, no wasted "hard worker with no quality" for no reason.

Its more like Vieira and Cesc in midfield, even Gilberto was a great passer, capable of getting in the box, a goal threat and got the ball forward quickly.

The league has been getting worse for 5-6 years, frankly any teams that finally went all out attack would rip this league to pieces.

Rooney can score from set peices, out side the box, inside the box, headers ect. Messi can do the same but most of his goals have came from team build up play then a simple one on one then a chip. Not saying that makes it easier but Rooney does tend to make something out of nothing.
