GRID crashing

Hi guys,

Got a weird problem with GRID on one of my machines. Plays fine to start with but, after a random period of time, will crash hard. Symptoms are the screen goes blank and then into powersave mode and machine is totally unresponsive. Can hear bursts of sound from the game so it's not totally locked but can't even Ctrl-Alt-Del and have to reach for the big red button.

Only seems to be GRID that does this so don't think it's a general power/overheating stability issue but think it is related to the graphics card in some way. This is a 4870 1GB with Catalyst 9.7. Are there any known compatibility issues with this game and these drivers or the 4870 in general?

BTW, am using the Windows 7 RC, build 7100.

Any advice appreciated :)

GRID is the game I play most, Have read people having similer problems on codemasters forums, Few thigns they advise is making sure speedstep is disabled in bios (grid doesnt like multiple clock speeds)

I dont think there any compatibilty with the 4800 series and grid, I used to use a 4850 now a 4870x2.

If your stil having problems, GRID tech support is here

I had a few crashing problems with this game, even though other things were (what appeared to be) absolutely fine. Turns out after doing some stress testing my PC was not 100% stable. Fixed that and the game was fine, seems to really show any weaknesses quite easily.

We might be on to something here! Have disabled speedstep and so far so good! Will need to play a fair bit more to be sure but looks promising, thanks!

Thanks also to everyone else who replied :)

Spoke too soon, it went again :(

Even tried turning off audio acceleration in case that was it but still crashes totally randomly. Starting to wonder if it just doesn't like the W7 RC.

Try downloading 3.5Net framework service pack one, only 2.5Mb, I was having crashes in Prototype for no reason and the repair options fixed it, might do the same here.

I've not had any GRID crashes on my 4870 on either driver set.

GRID has a lot of faulty cracks on the internet. If you are using a crack to avoid putting in the dvd, then simply reintall and use disc.

Also it reveals overclocking problems with ease. So pull back overclock if you've done that.

No cracks, genuine install with latest patch and disc in the drive. Gonna try knocking the drivers back to 9.5 - didn't want to do this previously as I'm at a LAN and couldn't risk screwing up everything else.

What CPU are you running the game on? GRID and DiRT have seperate config files for dual, quad and octo core CPUs.

If you're running on an i7 system you'll need to browse to the system folder within the games root dir and open the file workerMap4core.xml with notepad and copy all the text in there and replace the text in workerMap8core.xml with the stuff from 4core.

Recently joined this forum as I was having the exact same problem, I upgraded my card to a 3850 x2 thinking that was the problem.. still no good, so I upgraded again to a 4890... still no good on either Vista 32 or 64. I checked some of the American forums & theres all sorts of strange soloutions you can try, I disabled speedstep in the bios & reinstalled.. Disabled ATI AI and set the 3D performance to highest... Reinstalled the game on my 64 drive... Brilliant it works %100, played it for hours on top settings without a freeze. Installed the latest patch to see if THAT caused the issues... it started freezing again straight away.... I'm sorry, this doesnt help as you wanted to play online but if you just want the game to run then try what i did.
Hope that helps
